Geez...you guys get to use FLASH. They forbid any flash photography at ANY gymnastics event!

Anymore indoor shots without flash?

The earlier basketball shots look pretty good. How do users feel about the shutterlag time? It's supposedly a little slower than the 30D.

bauerknight - it looks like the camera focused on the player up front and not the shooter. Did you have it on center point focus?

The photo might have been cropped so that we are not exactly sure where the focus point is.

The 5dm2 does a decent job for most things. I shoot college and high school womens gymnastics. On the really fast moving stuff, the 5dm2 can't and won't keep up.

How do you mean "the 5dm2 can't and won't keep up", af?

Focus tracking. The 1d and the 5dm2 are is different leagues. When a gymnast is doing a FULL sprint towards you, the 1d series can keep up. The 5dm2 can't and won't.

Try this at a basketball game while the player is on FULL run with a 200mm focal length lens. If you have a shorter lens like the 135/2, it might have a chance, but not with the 200. I've tried many times! And that's with the 200/2.0L EF IS lens, which is arguably THE fastest focusing lens in the Canon lineup! I'm not talking about a "scan" from infinity to closest point, I'm talking about actual tracking.

If you shoot with a shorter focal length lens, the 5dm2 MIGHT track well, depending on the focal length you are using. The 1D on longer focal lengths will just nail the shot whereas the 5d can't. Processing power of the AF.

I would second this, the 5d mk1 I have found is better at AF than the 20/30/40d but yards behind the 1dmk3 especially in low light.

Thanks PM01, I was wondering how well the 5d2 coped with this sort of shot.

i went out and purchased a 5d mkii for sports... then started doing some research... not the right way to do things i know... should obviously do some research first... what i was reading was not very promising... and i was really worried that i had screwed up...

i have only shot 1 football game with the camera using a 300 f2.8...

I'm not experienced in sports photography, but I'd say you're getting along just fine. ;)

Good results.

The players aren't "hard charging" towards you. That helps. Also, you have PLENTY of light. So you are well within the AF capabilities of the 5dm2.

Keep up the good work!
