I was just watching "How it's made" and they had a segment on how LEE Filters and Gels are made. It was very cool. The filters are coloured by hand dipping, no wonder they're so expensive.

Obviously they need to work faster. ;)

I've never had much luck early, I have better luck at around lunch or in the arvo. The ones I've shot have tended to be those that perch on a branch or rock. Shooting them in flight can be very frustrating

I know. They're very aware! With the MP-E it's even hard when they're perched because of the focus distance. I did get a nice damselfly one day though. They seem to be a lot more subdued.

I find it best when I'm on the same level as they are. If I'm standing I'm sure to spook them so I often cammo crawl to creep up on them. I think the added benefit is the shots look better this way, side or front on rather than from above.

I was never trying to shoot them from above. One used to perch at the top of a set of stairs, so I'd move slowly up the stairs and toward it. I'd usually get about a metre away from it before it would fly off and do a circle. It rarely landed back at the same spot if I froze and stayed there though. :(

Most insects look better when being shot at around the same level as a front / side view. Unless they have patterned backs, it's pretty boring. :p

Anyone bought anything from this bloke? It's the world's worst website, (well, one of), but I've seen some good comments on a Flickr group re service. Anyone know what the gear quality is like?

Might save us some shipping from the US.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

I haven't bought from him but have heard those same good reports - he was at the recent strobist meet and seems like a decent guy. The prices are certainly keen.

Good start. I'm thinking of getting a softbox - http://imagemelbourne.com.au …p?cPath=25&products_id=74 (external link) - and seeing what the qulaity is like. I've got the stands, umbrellas, etc that I need.
