Ignore the false modesty people, Grigori is obviously running some sort of high-powered mainframe computer. A Fields Medalist cannot be on anything less.

I hope life has been good for you back at the Steklov Institute these few years, Professor.

That's really quite amusing, as I used to work with a Russian rocket scientist a few years ago.

Kinda

Home made Mac Pro (Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz Quad Core, 4Gb DDR2-800, couple of largish HDDs, nVidia 8600GT-512, running OSX 10.5.5)

Sounds good. Doesn't look like it'd be anywhere near as expensive as a Mac Pro either.

$1,300 in bits and about 3 hours farting about getting it all together and installing OSX and Windows XP on it. (Windows is for some games I have that run better natively than emulated).

Compared to $4k+ for a base Mac Pro. Yeah, somewhat cheaper. Of course the Mac Pro has Xeon's and the non-base one has 8 cores... If I had the money I'd buy a real Mac Pro, less hassle, more grunt, and a warranty for when things screw up ;-)a

Tax.

That is all.

Nice!

Smarter to be legal AND buy the better option, I'd have thought.

Depends, but I wasn't thrilled with it.

Naturally

Say hi to Mal for me

If the better option isn't around which is better then...... :p;) As I said, if the CE/EU is out when I buy I will get it, if it is US only I will probably get that...

Mal, I'll do that next regatta :)

Morning all...

:cry: Can't wait til my R-Strap's get here, so I can keep my camera's as far away from each other as possible.

:( oh no!

Anyone know how much it's gonna cost me to have the glass panel replaced?? Has anyone had this happen before??

What makes this damage worse is, I have a beach wedding next weekend and I doubt I'll be able to have it fixed by then. Me thinks I'll be having to tape this injury for next weekend, really well.

Don't bother sending it in, get the new one from canon parts, then just make sure you put it in right, AFAIK the sealing is just the thing is just the sticky stuff holding it on anyways....

Ok, downside of a 21Mpx sensor - stitched panoramas are really pushing the box... 13 shots stitched in CS4 came out to over 2Gb and PS wouldn't save it (won't save psd's over 2Gb - who knew?).

Cropping now, but it's taking ages. Might need to buy another 4Gb of RAM for the machine...

Maybe try saving it as a photoshop binary file, oh and def get 8 gig, what I have going now on my hackintosh...

Apparently Angus hasn't discovered the Command button, nor the multi-quote button.

Yay for Angus.

EPIC.

Not.

Lol, I reckon, or the multi touch....

Me too :D All of them...

That's what I was getting at. With larger RAW files, your system would be taxed in only two areas: processor or primary storage (RAM). One can argue the case for secondary storage (HDD space) too, but that's a fairly easy fix. I remembered that huge pano you posted the other day, and immediately felt you'd have a much harder time doing the same thing with RAW files much larger. A slower processor will do things slower, but an insufficient amount of memory might stop the project in its tracks completely. Not sure if you're using 2x2GB sticks, but a 4x1GB configuration would be annoying as you'd have to buy all-new RAM.

Last time I tried an 8GB configuration, I also had stability issues with my mobo. Intel said my particular mobo's northbridge might have been the blame. Thankfully they've finally followed AMD's footsteps in moving the memory controller in-die with Nahalem, so I suppose I won't run into that particular problem again when I do my upcoming rebuild.

Perfectly good with 8GB on my P35-DS3P and q6600@3.2
Oh and RAM makes a HUGE difference, Dave, make sure you have all the 64 bit kexts though....

Build one, they are great, take a bit of time to get running nice (IMO the premade kalyway and such kinda suck)

Yeah, Photoshop Large Document Format (PSB) worked fine.

I had problems with the JMicronATA one and my AppleHDA ones, I went from 3gb to 8gb, fixed the JMicron by removing it (all it does for my board is allow IDE, which I don't use anyways :p)
The AppleHDA was weird it started rooting itself when I went over 4gb ram in use, but only somtimes, I just repatched it with a newer version of taruga's patcher and that fixed it....

Ah cool, yeah I've currently got the JMicron interface enabled, but only because I was mucking around with a spare IDE drive and Windows 7 beta. That's gone now, so I should turn it off.

I'll see if there's a newer Taruga patch for my sound (Asus PK5-E board).

I'm taking notes. I reckon a new system build is going to be my next purchase.

I still have no idea what brand or models to buy though. Sweet FA.

At 21mpx, do you still need to make panoramas? Just crop?

Then again... I guess it's not as fun :p

Hmmm, I don't know...

I'd feel more comfortable having Canon do it. Reasons:

1. I'd probably get glue and sh1t all over the bare LCD's, and have gaps where the glue should be for weather resistance, and it would look like a bodgey job. Plus, I don't know what glue or silicon or whatever they use on these.

2. Re-sale - if and when I sell it. I'd prefer to be able to say that Canon themselves replaced it, should the new buyer need info on it. It will look brand new anyway as there is zero damage to the LCD's themselves, it's just the glass screen cover.

Well currently my widest lens is the 50/1.8, so yeah until someone wants to sell me a 17-40 or 16-35 at a price I can afford, stitching it is.

You can borrow a 10-22 that now fits on FF and 1.3s:p

I haven't replaced one personally, But I reckon it would be a dead easy 5 min fix, heat, remove, apply double sided tape that comes with it (I think) stick it on....
And you wouldn't be without a camera for a while.... I reckon just ring canon parts and see what they say (I dunno the number)
