That doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with it, they just voted with their feet :p:p

Oh and seriously collin get that x200 over the dell studio, that way it won't die after 1yr of uni and travel
If it were on your desk the whole time nothing wrong with consumer dells/lenovo/hp whatever, but when taking it on public transport, planes, through cities, etc regularly really takes it's toll on the consumer laptops, business grade (dell latitude are also good, just pricier for the 12 inch) are designed for regular travel and will handle that much better....

The weird thing is.. my XPS (the one that just died) died after 1.5 years. Yet my Inspiron 6000, which is Dell's consumer grade mumbo jumbo is still going strong after 3 years. I've taken that everywhere.. overseas etc.

The main issue for me is cost. The X200 costs around $700 (just did the online configuration) more than a similarly spec'ed Studio I'm looking at, and for that I'd rather take the risk with the Studio. I'm fully aware of Lenovo's reliability though - I used to sell them. I'm trying to maximise specs here while minimising price. For that, I've never seen anyone beat Dell.

I use Vista and it's much better now than it was. I also upgraded to 2GB RAM and it made a hell of a difference. I don't think I could have my own computer or laptop with XP again. I'm just used to Vista.

Sounds good!

I find x64 very stable and compatible with everything I have (which isn't anything exotic but I do have a lot of peripherals which all work)...

That's great to hear Feng. I know Dell provides 64-bit drivers for the chipset, network and video (AMDTI), so I'll be set regarding the base hardware. Past that, this laptop will only be used for CS4, DPP, web browsing, MSN, Acrobat Reader, WinDVD, Media Player and Excel 2003.

I'm kind of sick of all this Vista eats up resources for no good reason, because it uses memory that you aren't using to cache programs so that when you open them, they open faster. Thats just one of the things it does. And yes don't even bother going to vista unless you have atleast 2gb RAM.

Can you turn that off? Or does it matter if you have 4GB of RAM?

- software compatibility is in the toilet - loads of apps that run fine on XP just don't run at all;
- The UI has been changed so much that everyone's skill levels were effectively reset to zero - everybody has to relearn to use Windows from scratch;
- All the 'security' stuff they've added (UAC, I'm looking at you especially) makes it so hard to do anything - you're constantly fighting with it to let you do whatever you're trying to do.

Compatibility is the only thing I'm worried about there.

The UI I'll have to relearn.. but I'll eat that because everyone has to move onto a new OS eventually. If it ain't Vista, it'll be Windows 7. With regards to UAC, I hear SP1 toned down the annoying messages. I'm hoping that's the case.

The XPSs are really just more fragile versions of the inspiron lineup. Five friends from uni got one each last year (two 13 inch ones and three 15 inch ones) and they all have something wrong with them. From dead DVD drives to screen issues to just being flat out dead.

The studios seem to be slightly cheaper versions of the XPS systems so I am not too sure how they hold up.
