Can you turn that off? Or does it matter if you have 4GB of RAM?

I believe this is hard coded into the kernel. I see no point in disabling this feature. If you have a healthy amount of memory, you should be fine (4Gb)

Compatibility is the only thing I'm worried about there.

The UI I'll have to relearn.. but I'll eat that because everyone has to move onto a new OS eventually. If it ain't Vista, it'll be Windows 7. With regards to UAC, I hear SP1 toned down the annoying messages. I'm hoping that's the case.

I have found the UI in Vista was only a slight transition. The one to Windows 7 is far greater imo, just look at the Control Panel and Display Properties and it is a mess...

The XPSs are really just more fragile versions of the inspiron lineup.

 Consumer Dells ftw then. I ordered a Studio, I'll see how that goes. It won't be travelling too much.. mainly two trips to China.

Okay, but say Vista cached in 2GB worth of programs and I suddenly needed to run CS4 and needed about 3GB of memory, Vista would know to 'de-cache' when needed right?

These are my full specs (ordered):
Intel C2D P8600 2.4GHz
4GB DDR2
Radeon HD4570 256MB
320GB 7200rpm
Vista Home Premium 64-bit

I know this will run Vista absolutely fine - but I'm just hoping it runs noticably better than my old setup (2GHz T7200, 2GB) on XP. That's all I'm really asking for. Oh and no compatibility issues. If this happens, I will be happy with this purchase.

If Vista was to cache that much, yes it would de-cache (if such a word exists) what isn't it used to make room for what is needed. This is based on what happens when you run Orthos and Prime95 (benchmarking tests).

Don't get into the impression that Vista caches large amounts of a program however, probably only bits and pieces of the core that are necessary to execute it faster.

edit// I see you got yourself a copy of CS4. How do you find it?

Sydney Sound Relief was AMAZING! Everyone jumped into the mosh for The Presets, In the bucketing rain it was simply amazing!!! Feel sorry for the last 3 performers as most people left after the presets.

The main issue for me is cost. The X200 costs around $700 (just did the online configuration) more than a similarly spec'ed Studio I'm looking at, and for that I'd rather take the risk with the Studio. I'm fully aware of Lenovo's reliability though - I used to sell them. I'm trying to maximise specs here while minimising price. For that, I've never seen anyone beat Dell.

They both looked to go off well - well done to the organisers, performers and those who attended.

I could have photographed the Melbourne one but was glad I declined for a few reasons. If you look at how high the stages were getting decent shots from the pit would have been challenging to say the least (shots in the papers bear this out). The weather was also pretty nasty at times down here and to be honest there wasn't a single act on the bill I really wanted to see. I think I probably had more fun at Eddy Current Suppression Ring at The Espy last night than I would have spending 10 hours shooting at the 'G.

I'm living off 6gb per month at the moment... (mobile broadband)

Phil, are you going to the parade today?

Nah, had a few things to do this morning and could get back in time.

You end up going Ed? How was it?

Okay, I went there and configured a similar spec'ed setup for the X200's. Turned out to be around $2700, including something like $700 off. With Dell, I'm paying nearly $1000 less at $1800. But this probably isn't fair, as the X200 is a portable 12". So I went and configured a R500 to similar specs, and that again turned out to be over $2700.

If Lenovo can offer me a 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, non-integrated graphics, 320GB 7200rpm laptop (with whatever screen size) for $1800, then we're in business.

Brought it down to $2100 through some tinkering and coupons. Sounds much better.
