I want one of them, my computer is so loud, not compared to computers bought in shops, but it could be way quieter.

Mine's relatively quiet.
Antec Sontata III case, passive cooled nVidia 8600GT, stock cooler on the Q6600. A LOT quieter than my old machine - hell it's quieter than the darn gig switch.

no problem - i'm a silent/quiet pc freak and tend to allocate about $350 per build to silent/quiet parts. Got a thermaltake soprano, Antec solo, p182 and a silverstone case as the last builds, with usually antec NeoHE psu's. a passive cooled graphics card makes a big difference imo, but there's not much silent out there now.

don't suppose anyone has skills at post-processing people? have a few shots i can't post on here but could do with a hand p.p.ing for a client's review. pm or post here!

hayley, why are you selling your 17-55?.....aah. the EF-S bit.

I really like my p182 and big huge heatsink from that perspective, not silent, but quiet enough I can sleep while running the computer 24-7 in the same room OCed with 8800GTS :p

I would highly highly recommend you go quad core and 8gb ram!!
the ram makes a HUGE difference, and the quad core will soon enough....

Thanks for the welcome too. I've got a P182 and while not as good as some of the lian li's I agree its a nice well insulated, quiet and stylish case. A thermalright U120 with a noctua fan on my Q9450 ('round the clock 2.66 to 3.4 OC)... thermalright HRGT03 cooler with a noctua on a HD4870 GPU all running off a corsair HX620 PSU provides a system thats just about dead silent (the loudest thing is the stock case fans set to the lowest speed). I'm running vista 64 with 4GB memory and yeah 8GB would be nice (you notice the memory limitation once you start working with large megapixel files - especially when you uprez them for large prints, have lots of layers etc).

Same here. I've got a Noctua 12H heatsink/fan on the CPU, in a Gigabyte Aurora case (3 x silent 120mm fans) with a Corsair HX620 PSU.

The loudest bit is the HDDs.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Couple more computer questions.....
The cheapest quad core Q8200 is about $5 more than the duo. Is this one recommended or should I be going up to the Q9400? Still trying to keep the cost down.
Also...I have LR2 but only CS2, not CS4. DS seems to think that CS2 is probably 32 bit even though LR2 is 64bit. Can I run CS2 on 64bit?

LR is only 32-bit.

Spending money on processor speed is probably the LEAST good use of your money in a computer.

Says who? LR is 64-bit as well as 32-bit, there are two releases.
Photoshop CS4 comes in 64-bit and 32-bit, but CS2 is only 32-bit.

Hayley, for the extra $5, get a quad core.

I think CS4 within Mac OS is only 32 bit, but as Clarence said, LR2+ is 64bit as well as 32bit for both OS'.

Am running LR2 on my Vista64 machine utilising all 4 cores and >4GB RAM (dunno if it's utilising or just taking whatever's available. ;))

Thermaltake soprano with stock intel e6850 heatsink and stock ati 4850 heatsink.

I want to get a mini p180, thermalright heatsinks and better fans so I can use a fan controller..

hey boucher.

Mini P180 is good. I <3 mine. Fits a full-size Scythe Ninja in there, too. :) silence is bliss.

Just wish I could use ATX boards though :(

Me too, it works a treat!

Just tried splashing things into bowls and glasses. It's VERY hard with only one on camera flash :( I'm considering light painting and trails for my main assignment at school rather than strobist/splashes.

Edit: Ok, I've got a predicament. Another one of my mate's bands wants some promo shots done some day on the holidays (this week/next week). They'll probably only be using the photos for their myspace so should I just charge per hour and then give them x amount of photos? What should I charge? Any advice is appreciated since I've not gained much from what I've read about this here on POTN so far.

Morning guys!
If anyone is interested in a RRS L plate for a 5D I, non-gripped let me know. My new 5D II just had it's new plate arrive.
Also, let me know if anyone has a ball head that they don't want, that is good for a camera + normal lens - that I can put a Markins QR plate on.
2 tripods, 1 ballhead = sad hubby....
