But it's still significantly faster than the 50 f/1.4 you have...right?

Without doubt yes, i love the 50mm1.4- its quite zippy in a lethargic way, it moves quickly but takes a little longer to confirm focus- its like it does it in two stages.
Yes the 85mm1.8 is like an AF rocket, if you spend anytime with it you start to question the AF of your other lenses:)
After a 135L next, i hear that has a fast AF as well all that lovely fast glass :)

I've been spoiled by my 70-200 f/2.8L so the 50 1.4 is WAYYY too slow. Especially for sports, AI Servo is annoying when focus shifts unnecessarily.

85 1.8 better be as good/better than the 70-200!!

Don't worry, its gone by the third year :p

The finish seems to have been changed. The lens used to be medium to dark gray, now it is pretty much black. I'm not sure if it is just the color or the type of coating has changed too. It also comes with a pinch style lens cap now, wasn't like that before.

They both are good lens. They both have their advantages.

I've been set on the 35L for a long time, but the economy and $$ constraints require me to cut corners. Priority falls on getting a few more strobes, more Pocket Wizards, and building a massive sun diffuser panel.

In that case, why don't you get 30/1.4? I think IQ is comparable between 35L and 30/1.4 but 35L has a slight edge in focusing speed. If money is not an issue then get 35L.

Money wasn't an issue for me in this case. And I still opted for the 30. Much smaller and lighter. But that's me.

I love my 30 as well (got it few years back after reading your extensive tests and CW's experienced :)). It serves me pretty well to date, it's 80% on my camera.

I love this focal length on 1.6x crop so wouldn't mind upgrading to 35L for that better focusing speed.

I could set aside the $ for 35L but of course it's not a priority (not until my 30 breaks that is) and I better use my $ on other lenses :)

I agree that 35L is indeed larger (the 30 is already quite large...would love 35/2 or 50/1.4 size).
