The last time I shopped at Circuit City I went to the car audio department at waited for service. I asked someone for help, they went to a manager then came back and asked me to come back tomorrow. I never went back.

Crowds pack Southland Circuit City stores
Saturday, January 17, 2009
City News Service

SANTA MONICA (CNS) -- Crowds of up to 100 people were spotted outside Circuit City outlets across Southern California Saturday, but many shoppers said they were disappointed by a lack of big "going out of business" markdowns.

The Virginia-based retailer announced Friday it is planning to shutter its remaining 567 outlets across the nation, as consumer spending has all but stopped.

Glum salespersons facing unemployment in the worst recession in modern times faced customers looking for big bargains today. But although shoppers were lining up to get in, most were leaving with nothing.

"You expect low prices, but I am disappointed," said Santa Monica resident Chris Stillman as he walked out of the Santa Monica Circuit City carrying nothing. "You wait in line and you feel are almost obligated to buy something."
Some items were marked down 10 percent, but it was not clear if prices had been reduced after Friday's announcement that a group of four scavenger firms planned to sell everything down to and including the fixtures.

About 20 customers queued up for admittance at the Circuit City in anta Monica's promenade district, and waited about 10 minutes each before a security guard admitted them in groups of 3 or so patrons.

"I eyed the TVs downstairs but nothing has moved me yet," said windowshopper Wes Thompson of Santa Monica. He spent about 15 minutes spent browsing, but left without a purchase.

A West Los Angeles resident left carrying only his infant daughter, and said the slight discounts reinforced his belief that bricks-and-mortar retailers cannot compete with Internet-based discounters.

"It seems that is part of the problem," said Tom Jackman. "They can't compete with Amazon.com, because the prices here are just 10-15 percent off."

consider your company very lucky if you got back over 400k out of 500k.

As to CC's demise, there's one by my office. The store is completely uninviting with the worst service ever. I've walked out of there many times with nothing after having an item in my hand. No cashiers, only the customer service line.

Am I expected to wait behind three or more people returning merchandise so I can pay for a DVD? I think not.

The current state of the economy is only a small part of why CC is going under...

As outlined above, they made some very poor operational decisions along the way.

You are not kidding about the economy. My Xterra got broken into a few weeks ago and they took my Nuvi 750, then a week later they hit two more cars in the same apartment complex. Thursday of last week, somebody stole $5k in golf stuff out of the store where my wife works (Dick's) and then came back two days later and broke in through the same broken glass (boarded up with cheap plywood) and stole over $20k more golf equipment!! These people are getting desparate and ballsy. I am concerned that its going to get worse and more people are going to go nuts and some might even get violent. We are less than 1 mile from the Dallas Cowboys' indoor training facility at Valley Ranch and the cops are everywhere and people still try this crap!!

This is a small portion of an article that appeared in PC World's online edition:

The entire article can be read here: http://www.pcworld.com …city_i_wont_miss_you.html (external link)

".....Let's backtrack a bit. Back in March 2007, Circuit City fired more than 3,400 experienced sales people and other staffers simply because they were making too much money. Management then hired inexperienced, lower-paid workers to take their place. Bad move. Really bad move. This short-sighted decision may have looked good to then-CEO Philip Schoonover, who collected a cool multi-million bonus that year for his cost-cutting brilliance, but I'm convinced that it drove shoppers elsewhere. It certainly did in my case. (An aside: The Wall Street Journal named Schoonover the worst CEO of 2008 for his managerial bungling.)...."

But you'll also notice that he reaped the same rewards like so many other corporate bonehead CEO's who raked in millions in bonuses and golden parachutes after destroying the companies they managed.

You know, to be named the WORST CEO for 2008 means you REALLY had to suck. Between the auto makers, the banks -- even Bernie Madoff!!!

They paid a ton up front. To be truthful, I still made money on the deal, since I marked them up pretty hard to account for the risk. I just didn't get rich.

A local Office Depot is going out of business in my town. They have people on all the street corners in towns lugging around big signs "20%-50% off!". I get there and even with the discounts I can buy things cheaper online or even across the street at Best Buy.

No wonder they're going out of business.

I went to my local CC on Sunday. They only marked things down by 10%. So I could buy a Canon 5D with 24-105 for only $2700. Or I could have grabbed a brand new 40D kit for only $1200. Sorry, but there prices are still way too high. I will return in a few weeks when they get to like 50% off. but for now, 10% off of their high prices is nothing
