What do you do at 2am with an itch to shoot, a new tripod, and a new lens? You combine them!

Can you explain how to get the lighting that way? I am trying to find out how to do that, but can't seem to find out. :( I want to try taking portraits as well using that kind of light

Thanks guys!

Hknivers: I tried to describe it in the flickr description (the picture is clickable) but i'll post up a diagram. Also, to reverse engineer lighting situations, look for highlights/reflections. If you look on the piece right above the GITZO logo you'll see three highlights--one dead center and faint ones on each side. With this you can tell there were three sources of light and their approximate position.

Thanks! :D The two strobes with umbrella are more or less bouncing of the background or?
I really liked the mood in that photo! Have you done much with it in PS afterwards or is it just straight out of camera?

I had the umbrellas positioned like that (feathered) so the light would just kiss the edges of the tripod. I also had them slightly collapsed to focus the light a little more. WIth the settings used, the light hitting the black fabric background wasn't enough to light it up.

That's basically straight from the camera, and the second shot from the set. The first shot was with just the side lights--looked cool but you couldn't see the logo. Then I added the gridded strobe to illuminate the logo--it was a keeper.

I'm glad you liked it :)
