Hi All,

I took possession of my (used) 5D and 24-105 L kit last night and boy, am I impressed! Moving up from a 30D to this combo is a huge leap. The few pictures I took today, from 100-1000 ISO, look great. The images are sharp and have loads of detail. I also noticed that most of the pics (all taken in RAW) needed very little tweaking after being imported into LR 2.2 with the Camera Standard preset applied.

I also noticed vignetting at 24mm in some pictures, but I found that LR did a good job in correcting this. However, the pictures could have been left alone and been fine as they were. Also, I found that the 5D's shutter button has a much different feel to the 30D's which seems to have a definite "half way" feel after focusing. Again, no big deal.

Overall I am thrilled to bits with my 5D and 24-105 L lens, and cannot wait to run some more (a lot more!) pictures through the camera. The transition from 30D to 5D was an easy one in the sense that the controls, menu, etc., are set up pretty much the same way. My only regret is that I didn't make the upgrade to FF and the 5D earlier. (Anyone else out there with a 30D thinking about the 5D / 24-105 L combo should definitely make the switch!)

I am sure the 5d Mk ii is a great camera, and yes I would love to have one of my own, but the cost, the huge RAW files, and being realistic/honest about my own needs for a camera made the 5D / 24-105 L setup the most sensible choice for me. (Mind you, I do have an unchecked lottery ticket in my wallet...)

Thanks for all your input. (Should I get a 5D Now?) You are the best!

~Dom

I noticed the same difference in shutter but you quickly get used to it. Enjoy!

Welcome to the notorious 5D Users/Admirers group!

For the sake of some, please be judicious in your use of words like "magic":)...

But, coming from a 30D, like I did, I think you will find a sense of freedom -- some day soon, go out and try taking a bunch of shots at <gasp> ISO 1600 and report back to us!

Oh, and most of all, have fun with your photography!

Congrats on your 5D Classic acquisition. Let's see some samples when you have time.

I did the same switch from 30D/40D to 5D. Overall IQ is definitely an improvement.

Fantastic combo. May the Auto Shooting Modes RIP...great bonus you still get to keep the print button though!

I never used the Auto Shooting modes on my 30D. I tell you what I am missing though, the Auto Rotate function which rotates vertical images on the camera LCD to fill the whole LCD screen, but also flags the file for rotation in LR, DPP, etc. On the 5D if you set Auto Rotate "off", you will to have to manually rotate vertical shots in LR or DPP. It seems like this would be a simple firmware fix.
