Certainly a male and female, not sure if they are a pair as the pics were taken around a feeding station, never the less they made good subjects and did`nt mind having their pictures taken.

Great shots Carlton, the first one is outstanding. There certainly are a lot of different woodpeckers. :)

Nice shots. I, too, am curious as to the size of the bird. More the size of a hairy or a downy? It's interesting how close these great spotted's look to their American cousin's...at least I assume they are related?

Again, very nice shots.

:)

Rog,
copied from Wikipedia.........The Great Spotted Woodpecker is 23-26 cm long, with a 38-44 cm wingspan, so im guessing its the size of your Hairy, our rarer and smaller Lesser spotted Woodpecker is closer in size to your Downy.

Thanks for the comments.

Carlton,

Thanks for the info.

By the way, it's so interesting to me that our English system of measurements came from your country but metric is commonly used in yours...less so in ours.

Years ago, I had the chance to teach for about 1/2 year in London. Lovely city, lovely country.

:)
