Finally worked out how to strip colour out selectively using the GIMP.

C&C please, as this is my first attempt using layers in this way.

Looks ok, I also love selective colouring ^^

But I'd choose either the cup or the rose, both are just too much in just one photo ... Nicely done!

for me, i like them both colored. I want to learn this process sometime. I tried only once with pretty average results.

Skygod44...i always look forward to your submissions.

That is very nicely done. I think it would be cool if her eyes were open looking at the camera too.

Thanks for the comments all.

And SwingB, this was not a posed shot, as Maya-chan (pictured) and her friend came to see my wife and I after the "成人式" (coming of age ceremony) just for a chat and a cup of Ocha!

I think if Maya-chan had looked at me, she'd have jump about 10' in the air!!!!

very nice picture, the colors look a tad over saturated to me as generally you see a more washed color highlighted. I do like the two objects in color, good shot, and kudos for learning how to do it in the GIMP.

Really cool. I'm new here, so may I ask what GIMP means - and is there a short tutorial on the forums here, on how to do this? Thanks!

GIMP is an image editor similar to Photoshop.

^^^^^^ as per Bryanlee1981, plus, there are a load of threads with links to GIMP tutorials in the Post Processing section.

My advice is to read ALL of them, them spend 10 hours ripping your hair out as to why nothing seems to work, simultaneously wishing you'd forked out the mulah for Photoshop. THEN......after another 5 hours, you'll work out the GIMP and be sooooo pleased that you didn't fork out all that lovely mulah on Photoshop, 'cos then, you'll be able to put the money to something else, like a new lens, or body, or flash, or deluxe model inflatable doll (ooops, maybe that's just me ;))

Hey there jgoodstein.

Thanks for the "kudos" and here's the original image of Maya-chan to show you just how oversaturated the girls' kimono are for the Coming-of-Age ceremony here.

Trust me, I didn't touch the colours at all! :D

I like the full colour one best, by far! Selective colouring is so 1990s :p.

Oh, you're such an old nag!

Irrespective of togs' likes and dislikes, what I've found really interesting is the reaction to this pic from 100%-NON-togs, or P&S-only friends and family.

As I've said before on other threads, the only people who really give a stuff about pictures and cameras, is photographers....everybody else just wants to see a "nice picture", but they don't really know what a "nice picture" is!!!

Maybe we're all just deluding ourselves that anything more than a shoe-box with a hole stuck in it is needed to impress the masses.......;)
