This is my first attempt at a glamour shot. Shot with Canon XTi, umbrella mono flash, 1/125th @ f5.6, ISO=200, custom WB. Glow and gaussian blur in elements 6.0.

How'd I do? Am I on the right track?

Well done for your first try.
I would crop it so she is more the left of the frame and keep the blur out of her eyes and mouth.

I guess your photo is just slighty out of focus. It shall be very/most sharp at the eyes of the model. I am also new in photography so it is just my opinion.

The blur is a bit much for me. However, I may be partial b/c I don't usually care for blur anyway. Just a personal thing.

Also, a vertical crop would help draw the attention a bit more to the face and get rid of the dead space on the sides. Did you take this picture in landscape and then crop?

I need a catchy sig? Ehhh, I've got nothing...

I think your blur/oof combo needs work. Look up some tutorials on youtube for skin smoothing. I would say practice lighting composition first before worrying about it though. Keep shooting.

Agree, if anything, the lighting in the shot is pretty good, could use a bit more illumination to the eyes. Nail exposure and lighting in the field and the rest is gravy.

Yes, you are on the right track.

Major difference. It was confusing to have the hair in focus, yet the eyes which were in the same plane being out of focus. Besides, as has been mentioned, if anything should be sharply in focus it is the eyes. Much nicer.

My eyes were getting tripped out on the first shot- the blur was in the wrong spots.

The second shot looks much better, but needs a tighter crop. As stated before, try removing the open space on the left side of the shot. This shot would be ok to crop down below her head outline for an up close shot.

Good work! Keep going!

Thanks!

Dean

I'd like to see the original, too, for comparison. Still looks OOF to me.
