First time shooting a bike race. My good friend and fellow photographer is an avid bicyclist, and is training to start racing. He just joined a team here in Hawaii. He's gotten me into riding too, so I train with him sometimes. He signed up for a bike race on the Marine base here. We got to use one of the runways to race a criterium. Decided it would be a good opportunity to take some pictures! Borrowed another friends 200mm f2.8. All shots were with the 200mm + my 20D. C&C appreciated!

1. First race was the experts - Cat 1-3

3. Sprint for the finish!

4. Next up was the seniors - Cat 4-5. This is my friend.

5. The winner.

6. I ended up racing in the public open category. There were no restrictions on bikes, so I used my single speed fixed gear. I was the only person not on a road bike, and rocked my vans and toeclips+straps ha ha. Photo by my friend, PP by me.

the B&W looks very nice - full bike would really make it.
Shot 8 is also nicely set-up. IMO it would look better without that concrete structure in the middle.

Cool shots, cycling is my thing as well but i'm no expert so i'll leave the comments to the guys who are...

I must say I think your crazy (in a good way...I think) for riding a fixed gear bike in a mass start road race! Thats awesome... Did anyone have any problems with you on it? I know a guy showed up on one at a group ride I was on, and a bunch of the guys lost it on him saying he was dangerous and to go home. ha-ha.
I love my fixie, but tend to keep it for the track, or commuting when I'm needing a bit of a rush!

A body or two, a few lenses, a flash, a bunch of other odds and ends, a bunch of ideas and equal ambition... One day i'll figure it out...

Man doing a crit on fixie - you must be nuts or very brave :D actually I have to say "Good for You". I used to ride a singlespeed mountain bike, but was never brave enough to try fixed gear.

Pictures have good action, but I would lighten that shadows a bit.

Very nice use of DOF to isolate the riders, great use of negative space as well. Well done!

Spandex should be like having a license to practice medicine, you should only be allowed to wear it after being approved by a sanctioned board of experts and peers!

Last one is striking.
They do look like they are relaxing but the contrast of shapes,
flat road, green texture, round wheels is nice.
One like that taken when they are not in front of the bunker would be better!
Thanks for posting.

First, I think your images turned out nicely and I like the varied compostion. Agreed with Darcy on the last one (I'd clone the culvert out of that shot).

As for the fixie, right on! I still ride a lot of bmx and when I am off road, its all about singlespeed but only once did I ride a fixie (off road) and I thought I was going to die. In a mass start, woohoo!!!! Nice job and the Vans and clips were a beautiful nonconformist touch! I used to race C2 on the road and got out o fit since it was just a little too uptight for me. Something like a fixie and Vans shoulda put many in a tailspin, I love that!
