Happy New Year,

I am experiencing some softness with the 24-105L kit lens that came with the 5D MKII... it is really strange my 40D produced sharper images... is this an isolated case or has this happened to others?

Thank you,

Nick

Hi Nick - are you saying that the 24-105 gives sharper images on your old 40D than the new 5D?

The 24-105 is quite a fine lines and can deliver exceptional photos. Do you have some examples you can post? Are you using a different set of focusing points with the 5D and perhaps are not hitting the "mark?"

depending on what you are comparing it to, the 24-105 can be soft.

My 5D Mk II /24-105 combo is very sharp. Surprisingly sharp vs. my expectations. My first 5d Mk II kit wasn't quite as sharp, I even felt it bordered on softness. I exchanged the first kit (bought 12/2/2008) for a new one on 1/14/2009 - 2nd kit is damn sharp.

posting samples with the EXIF data would usually get you your answer faster.

Did the problem turn out to be in the lens or the body?

I'm not sure. I had another issue with noise in low-light video, which was the main reason for the exchange. The first kit did produce some sharp images, but not consistently. With the second kit every exposure is sharp unless I make a mistake, like a 1/60 shutter speed on an active puppy.

I asked the shop what Canon would do with my first kit, they said it would be tested and probably end up as a refurb.

By the way, when I had the first kit in the store, we shot a low-light video in the storage room with the lights off, then played it back on the 32" HD monitor in the store. While the staff agreed there was a little noise, they said it was light-years ahead of the videos they had seen coming out of the Nikon D90's.

now that's funny. Even a el cheapo 18-55 stopped down to f/11 taking a picture of something 10 inches from the camera will be just as sharp. I love it when people talk about how sharp their lens is and post images stopped down to f/8.0-f/11. ANY lens stopped down that much will be sharp. Then when your subject is 10 inches from the camera, well the image will be even sharper.

That's like saying...."look how fast my Ferrari is", and then drive it 25mph.

i dont like it when people do that either.
let alone shoot that at f/11. i find it pointless to shoot an f/4 lens at f/11 unless the subject calls for it.

which would be pretty much everything in the studio. You would be suprised, if sharpness is absolutely critical, shooting wide open might not be a good idea for many lenses... Except for the 200mm f/2L or the 300mm f/2.8L. To reach critical sharpness, most lenses need to be stopped down a bit.

Well said! I completely agree. Some people just don't understand or don't want to understand.

re op, could be body or lens imo. I have two 5D's and with the same lens one body is slightly sharper than the other.

That's interesting. I thought it could only be a problem with the lens.
