This is where I',m at now. I have a reasonable boom, But my stands are weak. I've been looking and can't decide which way to go, there's so many choices. I'm assuming steel is the way to go. I've heard people say to not use a C stand, others do.
I'll take any recommendations for a nice heavy duty stand without going too crazy on price

I heard C stands were some of the most stable out there?

This is the same link I posted above: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Boom.html#specifications (external link)

Is that price tag considered "too crazy"? We're on the same boat and I'm really leaning towards that stand. I don't think any two lightstands I own can hold this boom... together. Haha.

I was thinking $200-250. I like the idea of a taller stand 10-12+ feet as that way you are only pulling it 1/2 to 2/3 of the way out, I'd worry if I pulled that stand out to it's maximum, it would bend

if I were to go with a PLM, I'd go with the 86" silver one. Why? Because it can double as a ring light.

Examples:

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2577/3867640147_3214f8cda6.jpg

Apparently, the B800 used in that shot was only on 1/16th power and it was 7 feet away....guy still got f/8.

Your reasoning is the same one I have in mind. That's why I'm also leaning towards the silver PLM. Thanks for the input!

I think $200-250 can land you a decent HD stand.

Pham, I wish I had the "Little House On The Prairie" look around here in NYC. I'm jealous. Lol.

I like this shot Pham but since the eye is drawn to the brightest part of the image I can't help but focus on the feet. I think it would work better if the Sun wasn't directly behind her feet and slightly off to the side. JMHO.

As Rob pointed out, the silver, even with the white defusion panel is a more directional light source.

This image was made with the 86" and defusion panel. It was almost floor to ceiling and I was in front and just a bit to left of the PLM. It is the only light source.

The great thing about the PLMs is that the silver delivers one kind of light, the silver with defusion another and the white with spill kill another.

I like the white with spill kill because it has a chinese lantern kind of effect with the light radiating out in a broad arch. Makes a nice fill or soft side kicker and with a little care delivers a consistent F-stop for a full length or group.

The head and shoulder shot of the blonde illustrates how the white with spill kill can soften the silver with defusion for nice soft transitions. Along with enough directionality to provide modeling.

When I called AB they told me I should get the PLM since I do a lot of location shooting, I haven't taken his advice yet, but I've seen alot of great shots with them.
