Here 'ya go Vinny. I slid the umbrella shaft all the way out to make it easier to see what I was talking about in these pix. Also, I stacked several ND gels on there to make them more visible in the snapshot.

Thanks for sharing George, great idea. I've got the ND filters and aways used them with the reflector only. Next time I will try this way.

Well...Finally mt kids agreed to help me for a few minutes as the weather gave us a break! Although it was very saturated everywhere we went, I was able to grab this spot again.
Very quick set up with 1 ab800.....I am under the extreme beginner category! anyhow, here are 2 of my kids:
Lol...my son...who'd rather not sit still or be asked to pose nicely!

@1downfall - Why were you shooting in AP mode?

It hardly looks like you used any flash at all. Switch to manual mode and darken the background just a lil bit so that it makes the subject pop. How did you have your light set up?

Well... there is the proof that ab1600 > sun

I like the pictures, it almost acts like a vignette

Also depends how far away the modifier is from the subject...and the position of the sun and the subject.

Try it so that the sun is on the side or somewhere behind the subject. Use the light to fill in the shadow side of the subject and see how it looks. Remember, you can get the sky to look stupid blue if you're shooting 90 degree's from the sun.

This shot was taken in the direct sun using only my B800's

Frank,
That image has no characteristics that indicate a BD was used.
Its nice soft light, like one would expect from overcast day, but not what is characteristic of a BD lighting scenario.

Agreed. Thats not typical of a Beauty Dish shot.

Nice! What were your settings, on camera and bees. Did you use a filter or pull the skies with PP?

got a quick question, For the people shooting automotive are you guys using PLMs? Im about to place my order of ABs

Chad of chadbeephotography.com (external link), informed me earlier this week that:

"large soft reflections are worse than very small harsh reflections that are easy to clone out/hide in wheel wells and other places"

So basically, shoot bare. :)

Thanks David, I'm wanting to use the bd for inside and outside on models. I want to use the bd up close & personal. I have softboxes and plm's that I can use far away. Just want to use something simple with less shadow.

I agree and the problem I'm seeing (well, not really a problem) is that the beauty dish has become commonplace and most of the people buying them don't understand or really care to understand the concept behind the design of the dish. It's really just become a very convenient, portable light modifier for many. The sock is also common and a white dish with a diffusion sock at 6 feet from the subject is about as far away from the beauty dish 'look' as possible. Most of the soft light beauty dish work could be done with a small to mid softbox or octa, or for that matter, an umbrella.

That's not to say that the images being created are not gorgeous but they don't display any of the qualities that we normally associate with the design of the beauty dish.

Are you dissatisfied with the Genesis strobes? What would be the advantage or benefit of making the switch to Bees?
