ok, when i first started looking at Alien Bees, my thinking was that I would simply buy a receiver for each strobe I got, but now I'm thinking of just using my single receiver and slaving everything else.

what do those here with multiple AB's do? sync one and slave the rest? or sync every strobe you have?

i have a single receiver for every strobe...the problem with using optical is when you are shooting outdoor. you'll have misfires triggering the other slaves.

These are great! The last one looks like it might have benefitted from a fill light camera right, though. But great shots nonetheless. I'm certain that mother will just be fawning over these pictures. :)

thanks!

i'll probably go in and use the dodge tool and fix that before i send it to the mother. lol

I have 2 receivers and 4 strobes. That keeps a pretty clear center path without a bunch of wires to snag on.

If its a large outdoor shoot, my shooting buddy brings his additional PWs and we have one receiver per strobe.

But really, I could get by with one receiver and slaving the rest if I had to.

Can you mix pw with AB receivers and/ or transmitters?

What are the advantages of using PW?

Like anything, there are pros and cons for any system.

The PWs are the "gold standard", they cost a little more, but they work, all the time = every time. They have great range (1600 feet or so) and if you ever go and hire a model with other photogs, their lights will most likely be using PW - so you don't have to drag along your own strobes.

The PW can also fire your camera remotely too, so you will get some crazy ideas after playing with them a few hours.

I've never tried the AB receivers, as I already had the PWs before I got my AB strobes, but I'm sure others can chime in.

Canonnoob: Thanks, I did not know the Cybersyncs fired the camera too - a feature I use all the time.

If you use cybersync transmitter then you have to use cybersync receiver same with any other brands of wireless trigger system.

Although, just recently these transceivers came out that are compatible with the PW. I have not tried them yet, but if they work as reviewed, I assume we will be seeing a lot of them around:
