Is the upgrade to a 1D Mark II from a gripped 40D +$400 worth it? I shoot alot of sports and weddings along with various other things. Should I wait for another 1D series camera comes out and the value of the 1D Mark III's value drops more and go for one of those? Just wanted some of y'alls opinions on this matter.

Do you feel the 1DII offers something that you need that the 40D doesn't have? If so go for it. Why are you considering a 1-series in the first place?

Because I REALLY want an upgrade in AF (I want FASTER!) I also want the feel of a 1 series camera along with the ruggedness!

Haha that's funny because it's exactly the reason I ordered a 1DsII (which arrived this morning)!

Is the 40D missing AF on key shots for you at this time?

i had the same predicament but I will am waiting for the 1dm4 so then i can pick up the 1dm3.
The 40d is good enough for now. I need to learn more about composure and have my wife see that I really do need a new cam. :)

You are unhappy. Make your self happy. Simple. The AF is the selling point (IMHO) of the 1D.

I just got 1D body too. I shoot a lot of sports too and have used 30/40/50D bodies in the past. My plan was to keep my 50D around. After 2 days of using my 1DIIN I sold my 50D. I knew it would not get much use.

I also thought about waiting for the next 1D body to hit the market to pick up a 1DIII but who knows when that will be. I say go for it!!!

The other thing a 1D camera has over any of the xxD series of cameras is multiple computers on board.

One that is specifically used for focusing. So thats a huge help also.

I actually traded my 50D and some cash for a 1D MK III .

As an owner of both (until I sold my 40D's), I'd say that for the reasons you've mentioned, the 1DII would be a good upgrade. BUT the 1DII doesn't have awesome high ISO performance (quite good at 1600, pretty bad at 3200), and the pre-1DIII menu system requires significantly more dexterity than the 40D (seriously... prepare for a learning curve).
