That's my 'go to' 'default' starting point with close up portraits. Something just great about the 1.3 crop and 1D3 sensor combination with the 85L. :)

Hey, are you guys trying to dislodge me from my 5D/85L comfort zone? Trying to get me to think out of the box? I figure I've been pushing it keeping the 100-400 and 1.4x TC on the 1D, now you want me to put on the 85...I gotta say, Perry's got me wondering about the wondrous boost in the AF speed...hmmm...

The boost in AF speed on 5d vs the 1dm3 is SUBSTANTIAL. 5D feels like a little toy in the AF department compared to the 1dm3. I've shot with both for extended periods of time. If I just have to NAIL the shot, it's the 1dm3. 5d would miss quite a few, especially in sports.

5d is a nice honda or toyota. 1dm3 is a F1 race car.

Now if you're just a "grocery store and church" person, then the 5d will do you fine in terms of AF. But, if you're the hard core racer at the brickyard or a pro event, 1dm3.

I know the 1D well, and agree -- it's my workhorse when it comes to that type of shooting. But I still enjoy shooting with the 5D for many things, and the 85L, as slow as it is, is a lens that I enoy with the 5D a lot.

So, my question was about the 85L in use with the 1D3 -- how much does the 1D expand the use of the 85L AF-wise? Is it a combination that could <gasp> be used in AI Servo? Perry, are you going out on a limb and suggesting that?

'Course, when I get an opportunity I'll have to try is, it's just a psychological barrier I have to overcome:)!

Way to go doc!! Love mine (and I also love my 5dii). Different uses of course but what uses!!

Some stuff that says "Canon" on it and a happy trigger finger.

I use the 85 1.2L EF II in AI Servo and a 1dm3 for my gymnastics pictures. Works great! Even used the original 85 1.2L EF (mark 1) for gymnastics as well. Just have to be a bit more careful.

Yes, I'll go out on a limb and say that Servo is usable .

Holy crap. My 85L is a completely new beast on the MKIII. It's SO much faster than on the 5D!!

5D focus is like watching a snail crawl.:D

I am glad the 85 is fast on there! One day maybe....

I just picked up my MK III last week and yes have to agree that the AF when it hits it hits hard on getting shots.

Ok a little off topic...

It's funny I was watching Obama sign the 4 presidential orders this morning and it was hilarious listening to the photographers just "ripping" off shots when he would look up.

I know this sounds funny but I could tell the difference between the photographers that were using MK III cameras and MK II or MK II N cameras when they shot.

There is just a distinct sound that each camera makes in "machine gun" mode.

Kinda like the difference a .50 cal and an MG 42 make when shooting.

:)

I can pick this off also. During a sports event, I can count the number of 40D, 1dm3, 1dsm3 (ultra rare), Noink D3, Noink D200/D300, etc.
