some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

pbtech, they were very good at taking back the bad RAM I got before xmas.

Lets see how good they are taking back a bad board.

They don't have any new similar spec intel boards in stock, only Asus and Gigabyte.
Hopefully they can send this back to Intel and claim on it, give me a credit, and I can get a similar spec Asus P5Q.

Well the store was nice and cool.

They took the board back, and are ordering a replacement from Intel.
Anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.

That's pretty good. Are they going to submit it to some tests first or straight out replacement, no-questions asked??

I have had a problem with a brand new PC I purchased 5 or 6 years ago from NFC Technology and it was the Firewire card. Got the system home, fired it up and it went "poof", had the smell of magic smoke being released. Took it back the following day & they replaced it in its entirety! They told me latter that the firewire board had a short, showed it to me and there was this big (the size of a 10 cent piece) scorch mark on it. Lord knows what it was caused by but good service (as it should have been) I think I paid a little over 3 grand for it back them.

I got the impression Intel would just replace it outright.
I think it would cost them more to test every board that came back for replacement.
The tech did mention they hold extra stock for warrenty claims etc. Hence the delivery time. The extra stock could be anywhere, from Auckland to Singapore.

All fixed, Intel fixed it rather than replaced it.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

They fixed it ?! , must have been something fairly obvious to them then, did they let you know what it was?

Nothing noted on it.

I think it was a manufacturing defect with the firewire, and when I plugged the camera in it exposed it.

I am surprised they didn't just replace it, so it must have been something simple.

I blew the firewire port on my old camcorder by connecting to the PC while the PC was switched on. Heard the same thing plenty of times with firewire kit. Never with USB which is supposed to be hot-pluggable as long as you remember to "safely remove...".

I did a bit of a search in Google, and it appears this was a common problem with the early iMacs as well. Only they would blow the device that was plugged in, and not the computer.

Despite all the talk about "how swapable" I guess it still pays to be careful.
USB and Firewire and both powered, and when you disconnect, or connect a powered connection there is a chance for a voltage spike, and voltage spikes can do lots of damage to sensitive electronic equipment.
