Thought I should document this to see if anyone else has had this. See this thread on FM, same thing is happening to mine, I posted on the top of page 2

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/730794/0 (external link)

My post
"Same thing happened to mine, I called Canon, they had me clean the contacts on all of my lenses and body with an eraser (like at the end of a pencil) it worked for a bit then did it again, then worked, then again. I tried all my lenses, (all L's except my siggie 50/1.4) Called back, they want to look at it. It's just like you say, the FP light will light, but no AF, no beep, no hunting, nothing. Cleared all my CF's changed batteries over and over, nothing.
It's on it's way to Irvine as I type."

Anyways, bummer, I got no body for a week or so.

Just curious - are you using the back button for focus or the shutter halfpress? I wonder if that would've made a difference.

I use 1/2 press but tried both.

So the focus point would light up, but pressing the shutter would do nothing?

Yeah, it lights, I get no beep confirmation that focus was achieved and it just does nothing, it will light up briefly then go away.

Interesting indeed.

I had something very similar happen to me over Christmas break. The camera wouldn't AF no matter what mode I'm in. It'd take the photo but wouldn't autofocus. I had to remove my grip/battery and when I reattached everything, then the camera returned to normal. Has yet to happen again, but it did give me a good scare. That's the only time my 40D has ever given me any problems.

Sounds sort of similar to what happens with a dirty shutter button or bad shutter button sensors...

What happened if you switched the lens to MF?

It wouldn't confirm focus in MF either

maybe the camera is stuck on AI Servo somehow which is why you don't get a beep or confirmation?

Yeah, you know, I thought of that but it doesn't Af at all, but it acts like it's in servo, without the AF that is...LOL

On FM, the first sentence was exactly my combination! It happened to me once, and I thought it was just a fluke.

I have FC on the back.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna miss that 1 million dollar shot now
