I have searched for this and cant seem to find much, although a while back I saw some post about it. Wanted to know what the standard rate was for track photography? Planning to sell prints/downloads online and the track wants to know if they will get a commission off of the sales. Wants to know meaning how much do they get. I am not opposed to this cause I think it could be a win/win for both track and me but wanted to know what was "fair" 10%? 15%? 20%? How does one keep track of sales and prove to the track what has sold? This would be for car racing and motorcycle racing at a small start up track.

Thoughts on this?

Every track I've been to they have a shop set up so I am not sure on the comission. I thought the photo place just paid for the store/booth they used. I know typically for about an 11x14 size print the shop gets about $30 for them. If you didnt have a shop at the track and they were just letting you take pictures and sell them off a website I couldnt see them charging more then 15-17 percent. I would see maybe if you could work out a flat rate fee...or even maybe just an advertising fee or something

I've only been asked to pay (in UK) if I was going to sell on circuit and would be charged a traders permit fee for a itch etc.

I have never paid a track a commission either. I have been hired by some clubs directly for a particular event and have done others "on spec" since I keep my camera with me on days that I am actually on the track and then shoot other run groups. The only times I have encountered any difficulties is when a track has contracted with a specific photographer to shoot all events and the club I am trying to shoot for doesn't want to use that photographer. However, that is an issue between me and the track photographer rather than the track itself.

I cover two tracks at weekends & a race meet about twice a month..

One track i give 10% of anything over my set up charge, so they get abit when the suns out. The other track i pay nothing, he sees having a photog as a draw. The club I pay £ 25 a meet & a advert in the programme, we sponsor a couple of racing for the nippers during the season.

In the end, I don't mind paying they are small amounts against what we take, it works for both parties this way & the club goes out of thier way, advertising my products on the sites regularly. But just remember for some tracks having a photographer & printing at the track does help them aswell bring in more riders if you are regular..

I pay the track no commission, they way it works is I give the track a disc with the complete shoot of the previous meeting and they then use the images as they wish - adverts, promo, publicity, website etc and in return I'm free to sell round the pits to the competitiors.
