Hey guys...

So...someone(s) broke into my car over the weekend where I had my camera tucked behind my passenger seat after a shoot, and they stole my 40D and both my lenses that were in my camera bag.

So... I'm now looking around for a replacement camera, and a photographer friend of mine said to upgrade to the 50D. So I'm looking at it, and I'm reading everywhere that the higher pixel density results in NOISE issues???

Has anyone encountered this?

Should I go back to the 40D???

Any ideas?

thx!

That's one of the reasons I didn't buy the 50D. I'm very happy with my 40D.:)

Sorry to hear about your gear getting stolen. Hope they find the people responsible.

Thanks.. Yeah I'm not holding my breathe thats for sure.

So do you think I should just re-purchase a 40D?

I mean, I rarely shoot at a high ISO anyway. Is that when this noise occurs most?

I would say the noise is close or just a little better then the 40D. Then you add the new menu and features of the 50D and its an easy choice. The 40D is great but I think the 50D has more to offer.

The 50D certainly does have some features that I do think are very cool

Am i right that the noise issue is occurring on 50D's just at the higher ISO levels?

I think the initial noise issue was really an issue with ACR the 50D files...not sure if that has been resolved or not. Also, while the 50D doesn't make huge gains over the IQ of the 40D, it doesn't appear to be worse.

Part of the problem (backlash) was that Canon (Chuck Westfall) initially claimed that there was a 1-1.5 stop improvement in high ISO noise, and that is clearly not the case. As it turned out, he was referring to jpeg performance with NR on...which is still debatable and rather irrelevent to many people.

Ok.. hmm.
Yeah I was just browsing through another thread about the noise and grain in 50D's... there seemed to possbily be a solution for it? Looked like there was a significant jump in noise from ISO 200-400...

what to do, what to do....

I think the high ISO thing is going to get a different opinion from everyone. Its good and bad. I shoot in real dark venues so have issues but if I am in low light it does fine. I never had issues up to ISO 2500.

Shooting is sRAW will improve the high ISO performance and still give you plenty of resolution.

the only thing nice on the 50D is the screen...the rest is just toys to fix problems canon can't fix themselves.

If you could go back, knowing what you know now, would you have purchased the 50D?

He is the wrong person to ask...lol He clearly has it out for the 50D. I think waiting it out will get you better responses. Not so one sided if you will. See other 50D post.

The new LCD is great as well as the new menu system. Well worth it and needed improvements.

What is it you are going to use the camera for? Maybe some more details will help direct you in the right direction or give you better feedback.

Well..to be honest I'm shooting a bit of everything.

I do mainly portraits for the time being, but I'm branching into engagements and weddings...I do some work with kids, and every now and then I'll shoot a local nightclub.
I had the 580 EX II, but now I'm downgrading (cost reasons) to the 480 EX II. I'd only had my 40D for 2 months before it was stolen but I loved it !!

I shoot indoors and outdoors based on weather. I'm kind of a do it all photographer. The only thing I rarely ever shoot is movement of any kind/ sports/ etc.

I've yet to have a need for large prints or anything like that either.

I just went through this painful decision myself. I went for the 40D for several reasons.

1) The noise isn't improved with the 50D, if anything it is slightly worse shooting RAW. Many reviewers have said the same thing.

2) The features of the 50D are tempting, but I've lived without lens adjust and VGA screen for this long, it's not a deal breaker for me. I'd rather have better IQ than more features.

3) Price of the 40D is less of a loss should I sell a year or two from now.

4) The diffraction at lower f-stop was another reason....f7 for 50D vs f9 for 40D. I know this difference is insignificant in the real world, but better IQ peace of mind is more important to me than added features.

5) The 40D is actually rated slightly higher than 50D here..
