Guys, I'm in a bit of a pickle. Searched and still can't decide, cause not many people have posted actual results of both.

Since picking up the MKIII I haven't really used the 40D that much. That said, I already own the Canon 10-22 but would like something on the UWA side for the 1DMKIII. Should I modify the 10-22 to work on the MKIII or should I sell it and buy the Tokina 11-16? Will the 10-22 be able to use the AF Microadjustment? Will the 11-16?

My lens collection is:
Canon 28/1.8
Canon 50/1.4
Canon 60/2.8 (for my 40D macro)
Canon 70-200/2.8IS
Canon 100-400

If I was in your fix, I think I would modify the 10-22. That being said, I do like my 11-16 and I don’t think you have the chance of hitting the mirror at the low end of the range with the 11-16 where you could with the 10-22 when modified.

Did you see Lightrules's review? The Tokina was clearly superior imo

Modify sounds too hard for what it is. Its just pulling out the back piece of the lens. real easy to do. I would just buy the tokina just because you wouldnt have to worry about the mirror hitting

I say keep the 10-22 and modify it. There's even a tutorial somewhere on here that shows how to insert a little wire ring so that you CAN'T zoom below 12 mm, so there is no chance of the mirror hitting.

One thing also to consider, is that the gap between 16mm (if you go the Tokina route), and 28mm is pretty huge.

Also, since you already have 2 Canon zoom lenses, and I'm sure you're used to zooming from their short end to the longer end, (or vice versa) in the same direction by heart on both lenses, the 10-22 also zooms in the same direction, whereas the Tokina, (and other 3rd party zoom lenses) all zoom in the opposite direction, which could cause some confusion if you are trying to capture a shot in a hurry.

Just something to think about.

Hit up picturecrazy (Lloyd). He uses both the 10-22 and 11-16. IIRC, he has both 1.6 and 1.3 bodies too. I think he can use the Tokina at 13mm on the 1D. PM him or search his posts on the issue.

Here's some examples (although these are with the 1Ds so obviously it'll do better with the 1.3 crop):

If it were me, other then worrying about accidentally using too low mm and hitting the mirror with then 10-22, I would be worried about ruining the resale value of the canon if you modify it and the decide you don't like it, don't use it, or a better ultrawide comes along for 1.3X. So I would sell it, buy the the toke and maybe pick up a case of beer with the left over $.

Here the link: http://daniel.nordling.nu/foto/EF-S-10D/ (external link)

It is a website that shows how one guy modified his Canon EF-S 10-22 so it can be used on a 10D. The 10D has roughly the same size mirror as a 40D or 50D but was made before the EF-S mount was "invented" for the REBEL 300D.

I am not sure it will work on a 1D with a 1.3 crop body. Anyone know?

I found this quote on a Flickr Forum: http://www.flickr.com …/72157604422834954/page2/ (external link)

Lemons into Lemonade: The 10-22 'EF-S' on a 1D...

-on the 1D and 1D2 you can use it from 10.5mm to 22mm with no mirror bump. if you do get a mirror bump it's just annoying but won't hurt anything
-the vignette disappears at 12mm and you lose the dark corners at 13mm.
-good for people who have added a 1D type or 5D type body to their collection after using 20D type or rebel type. just keep the lens!
