I've been shooting indoor sports (volleyball, basketball) with two speedlights (580 EX & 580 EXII) triggered remotely using pocketwizards. I've been getting pretty good results but I want to do better. I just purchased a couple of Vivitar flashes, pocketwizard, and supporting cables and mounting hardware. I haven't shot a game with 4 lights yet and am not real sure the best way to position the lights.

Has anyone shot indoor sports with 4 lights? If so, can you give me some advice on placement?

Well, from my experience, you never want to point the lights directly at players. Coaches hate that. Try to set them up so they all bounce the light down on the playing floor.

And its just rude, in my opinion. You say your results have been decent with the two flashes? What exactly then are you looking to improve?

As far as basketball goes, if you have no problem with direct flash, try putting one under the basket against the wall. It helps with fill flash for the front of the players.

Four lights for basketball has been a standard for decades. One per corner. The best setups, of course, go beyond shoe mounted flashes and use big high-mounted strobes. (external link)

I've never had a coach that realized I was even using flash if it wasn't on camera. Never had a player notice direct flash during a game. I've asked dozens of coaches, hundreds of players (and wrestlers).

As DC Fan said, one per corner and as high as you can get them.
