Does anyone know of a good resource that gives some guidelines on how much data you need for certain print sizes... Basically the root of the question is how tight can you crop an image and still get say an 8x10 or a 16x20 to come out good in print?
There really are no hard and fast formulas that apply. There are times you would be hard pressed to get a decent 8x10 out of an uncropped image and other times that you can print a 200% crop to 16x20 and it looks fine. The easiest answer lies with a test print. Even with an inkjet on plain paper...you can get a feel for how a shot will print on photo paper...
The other thing you can do is crop your image and then view it at 100% on your monitor....if you are seeing jaggies and other issues...it probably isn't going to print well...if it still looks reasonably good...you can generally get an ok print. Big thing to remember is that the further you have to crop....the better the original image needs to be in order to get a quality print.
