You are welcome Permie...as a late comer into the convo regarding your switch over, do you mind my asking what made you decide to switch?

well, I hope I won't bore you with a long story (I'll try to be concise).

I used to own a 5D and loved it. My only complaint was that it seemed to be a dust magnet. Then the M3 came out and with it's 1-series weather sealed body and 10.1 mp I thought it could take the place of the 5D so I sold my camera (something I always regretted doing) and bought the M3 to replace it. The M3 had focus issues for almost a year before canon fixed it. It was frustrating and really soured me both on the M3 and canon. Once the focus issues were fixed I still found that I missed FF and really wanted it back. So I picked up a 1ds2 and really loved that camera (except that iso 1600 was as high as I could go and often in low light wedding shoots that's not enough). I rarely used the M3 after that and felt that it was a waste to have it sitting in my bag.

Then I had the opportunity to switch the M3 for a D700 with lens & flash. Because of the 1ds2's non-ability for high ISO's I thought that a dual system would answer all my problems. That I'd keep both the ds2 and the D700. But I did not realize how different the nikon and canon systems are. They are polar opposites...if you turn something one way for canon it's the opposite for nikon. On a paid shoot, time lost trying to remember which way I go for which camera wouldn't have been good.

So I looked at the benefits of each camera and while the 1ds2 has the "angel factor" and the D700 doesn't  they both have weather sealing, they both are FF, both have excellent AF systems the D700 is better at high iso's and lighter. Also, nikon had the lens I really wanted for my work (the 14-24). So I decided to move completely over to nikon when the chance came.

Dan has the Ds2 now (which he really wanted) and so we're both happy. Though I've got a lot of learning to do before I get another paid gig. The controls are really different.

Anyway, so much for being concise.

I see, I see. That is one heck of an adjustment. I wish you the very best. I know you will conquer the obstacles!

I remember your M3 plight back when I was a regular and Craftgirl. I think I took my break just as you were sending it off or something like that.

One thing I miss (it's silly) is being able to talk gear here. Mostly because I know that the people on this thread are knowledgeable and I don't have to weed through the fanboy-ism of other forums or threads. I could just ask a question and someone here would have the answer. Because no one shoots nikon (which I suppose is normal for a canon only forum ) I have no one I trust to ask questions too. Research takes a lot longer (due to the weeding) and I keep hoping I'm not making mistakes.

Well, you should have thought of that sooner, young lady.

I'm in an Apple Store in San Diego.

I would get the 70-200 IS F4. It isn't the best lens per se for all your work, but it will work just fine.

You can always upgrade to the 2.8 when you are able to.

If you could squeeze in a 85 1.8 for some portraits it would be worthwhile. The 50 will be useless, I don't trust mine to accurately focus in critical situations wide open.

These were with my 70-200 f4 just for some examples.

Nice photos Riley, especially the one of Bailey!

Shots look OK.. maybe it is the pixel peepers getting too carried away. We all know how they end up :D

There is basically only one transition left for my setup - I have decided at some point to give up crop cameras. I find that the x0D series cameras have just not delivered the reliability I need, they always seem to be experiencing one issue or another (usually an ERRxx issue), whereas the 5D just keeps on ticking. It ain't called the cookie cutter for nothing.

Even for my MBIF, the 5D2 is expected to yield massive pixels for cropping manually in LR anyway.

Oh yeah, this post brought to you by the aluminium 13" Macbook. It has a superb display: suddenly all my photos look SO much better than before!

I have a 24" iMac and 5D/24-105. Couldn't be happier. Do you find the 13" screen large enough for pp, or do you use a monitor?

hehe, Mike.

Permie, You must feel so isolated and alone sometimes there in Nikon land. I do so hope that when the Nikoners realize your worth and adore you that you wont forget us canonites. Don't let them haul you away....We may have to fight for custody.

For a portrait lens...I'd have to go with the 85 f/1.8 for the budget conscious. Probably one of the best bang for the buck lenses in the Canon line-up....my second choice would probably be the 100 macro....a bit slow to focus...but delightful bokeh and razor sharp.

85 f/1.8 is a great lens. I don't use it as much as I wish I did, because whenever I do get it out I just love the results it gives me.

Togra4 wrote in post #7169913 (external link)
I did read up on that one. It was on my possibilities list for the $600...I am glad I was not wrong in putting it there.
...
Plus I hear the 85 1.8 is good for Basketball...i sure would be getting a big bang for the buck with that one....

Absolutely. It's very, very fast focusing, and a great range for indoor sports on a crop camera.

For what it's worth, here's my two cents worth. When I bought my first SLR, the only lens I had for two years was the 50mm 1.4. I don't think it would hurt a bit to stick with the 20D/nifty combo until you can afford another lens that you really want, unless you absolutely need a different focal length right now.

You have picked up speed, though. ;) While I like shooting with my 50 f/1.4, and really like the focal length, for me keeping up with my kids I couldn't be an exclusively prime shooter. I need zooms, and I need anything from wide to long. I'd have been incredibly frustrated with just a 50.

The 70-200 f/4 is a great lens to add to any lineup. The 85 f/1.8 is a little more special purpose because of it's length, but if it's a range you'd use, it's a great deal for the $$$.

Thanks David for the input on the 70-200 and the 85 1.8...I want them both now, but then to keep the good spread, I have been fairly convinced of the Tamron 28-75 2.8 now as well...I am pretty sure that I will go with the 70-200 f4 for now...soooo

Let's say a friend just opened a bridal shop and is interested in me shooting for her clients as they try on dresses? She has let me know that she has at least 20ftx20ft of space with a chaise-like couch. So there's room for my lights...Could be groups when the bride brings in her girls...could develop into e-sessions (I am not ready for weddings just yet)....Would that change anyone's suggestions at all?

I had a Vision this morning, out playing with the new camera I hear this roar, looked up to see this hot air balloon. It was a test see, I was shooting some bugs and had to quickly change settings to shoot the balloon.

The 28-75 might not be wide enough for groups in that space considering the crop factor. My son has a 30D with one of the lenses that have been mentioned here earlier, the 17-85, and he loves it. My 5D, 24-105 would work in a room that size. Your 20D plus 17-85 would give you an approximate full frame FOV of 27-136. Sounds like you could make some money with it and then buy more gear!:D:D:D
