Crash them weekly? What brand are you killing? And what models?

Multiple vendors, all top end products. They sure don't meet the marketing hype. Can't comment too much on the specifics, of course.

Let us just say that there is hype, and there is lots of hype. I am so thoroughly un-impressed that it will take a great deal to give me my faith back. Playing at the top end of the spectrum, the game is very different. For me, too.

Smoke signal.

I got the Carrier Pigeon. Now, if only there was less traffic congestion around parks and major urban centers, the people feeding the pigeons really screws up packet transmission...

Might consider smoke signal as my line-of-sight redundant backup - at least it doesn't get eaten or is eating like the birds :p

Our smoke signal system has been down for weeks - at least in the southern states. Something about the bush fires causing too much interference.

They did consider signal flags but couldn't see them through all the smoke.

Just had an interesting thought. Can you imagine surfing the net via Morse Code.

It's time to put down your flint axe and step into the UMTS/3G/LTE age ;)

On a slightly more serious note I just said goodbye for the last time to a colleague who was an expert in all of the above...he will be sorely missed. :( :( :(

I took some shots at work at a retirement function for a Engineer I've worked with for years. He hasn't been at work for at least 18mths as he had a double knee replacement (used all his sick leave up - more then 12mths) and then took some of his Long Service leave. He had clocked up 52 years of service in the Electricity Supply industry, all of it here in Brisbane.

The amount of knowledge he has about our system is staggering. We are replacing plant and equipment that he installed and commissioned 40yrs ago.

Routers crashing weekly seems like something most vendors of "top end products" would be pretty interested in getting resolved. I've got multiple Cisco devices with over a year of uninterrupted uptime, not that my network is overly demanding. But I also have friends in the industry who's networks are overly demanding and they have the same experience with Cisco equipment, looong durations of uptime with little to no problems.
