Oh, Lisa, there are a lot of discussions here about shooting with the 85L, as in how to approach shooting at f/1.2, do they have those discussions in the Cafe, or are people just going crazy tossing out missed shots?

well, honestly, most people just shoot wide open at 1.2. Dan and I were just looking at some of the photos from that particular thread and talking about how people don't know how to use that sort of lens properly. Some of the shots were correctly done but most had half of an eye in focus or that sort of thing. And I'm not picking on them, I see that a lot here too.

But I never see any discussions on how to do it better. Mostly it's like no one notices. They just go on and on about amazing shots when 2/3rds of them are out of, or missed, focus. It's so weird. (truly twilight-zonish)

It could be that it's a young forum. (not necc. young people but maybe young as in not too many members) I've just never seen anything like it. It's not restricted to there though. I see it on other forums in the nikon section.

I wonder sometimes if they aren't used to pretty bokeh? I don't know. Because all my af lenses are from a 2008 release and they have quite nice bokeh. My old lenses have interesting bokeh...some of it looks painting like but all of them are unusual. Pretty but not creamy like some of the lenses I used to own.

I dunno. Having not grown up nikon, I'm just not understanding the phenomenon. But I freely admit it makes me so confused to see dozens and dozens of oof photos being praised.

NO. I like that place. It just confuses me but it's informative and most of the people are nice.

Did you look at that thread? (not just the post I posted but the whole thing?) I'd be really interested in another opinion. Even opposing, if you think I'm off my crackers.

I will when I'm on a real monitor. My 13" MacBook leaves a bit to be desired.

Looking for some ideas, I'm doing a 50's themed shoot with two models and two other photogs next Saturday. What other props can you think off, this is what we have so far.

old black phone, flowers, huge lollipop, coke bottle, sunnies, milkshake, cigarette holder, parasol

A '50s "record player" and/or TV would definitely add some atmosphere.

Last night I did a little bit of detective work. I managed to track down the contact details for a private camping ground I used to visit as child. I lots of fond memories of the place so now I'm looking forward to taking my kids there. I'm excited!!

I spoke to the owners and the are saying it hasn't changed the the last 30yrs.....

45 RPM records are definitely a 50's staple.
Poodle skirts.
Dial phones
Black & White TVs
Box cameras.
Coca Cola fountain glasses
Shoe skates
Waitress on shoe skate.
Mid-calf skirts.
Blouses with collars turned up in the back.

If you want some ideas, rent America Graffiti. It's a little post-50's, but you should get lots of ideas.

Saddle shoes, tailfins, crew cuts or Bryl-Creemed hair, ducktails (there's the POTN tie!), Polaroid folders.

Good ones....on the subject of shoes, white bucks (a form of suede) were very 'cool.'

Levis, white tee shirts with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in one of the sleeves. Engineer boots (for hoodlums).

The Levis have to have a narrow cuff, and be worn fairly low.
