We just aren't on the road enough these days for there to be any chance we'll use them up in the forseeable future. Add to that the concern that in these tricky economic times, Marriott could just cancel their rewards program with little or no notice. So, I decided to see what merchandise they had available. They had a couple cameras, but the only one I really wanted and could see myself using, was the G-10. I recently shipped my G-9 off to parts unknown, and as always, I now wish I had a good P&S. The G-10 fills that bill nicely, I think. I think you made an excellent choice Chief. I also hope you sell the house quickly.

(Windows 7 just so does not impress me. Aero shake? When I can just clear the screen with one F11 key in Expose or four fingers on the pad?) The setup is the same except the 40D is giving more ERR99's and ERR01's, and a 17-85 had an aperture jam on me at a tremendously bad opportunity, and as such I have lost faith in crop cameras full stop (see year-before-last's 17-55 tragedy: has it really been year before last? Time flies). Will be considering 5DMk2 except that I discovered one amazing fact: my 5DMk1 has only got 16K frames on the clock. What? I thought I shot at least 25K on them. Either my maths is wrong, or I have reset the counter twice but only remembered one. Either way the 5D classic has a lot of life in that so I will be shooting that for a long time to come... Yoda! With a sensor that size, the more Mp you cram onto it, the worse the noise becomes, right? Yep. thomascanty wrote in post #7213944 I was heading home from Death Valley. Somewhere between Trona and Ridgecrest my GPS told me to turn left. I usually head right through Ridgecrest to the 395, but I had time to kill, so I decided to humor it and see where it wanted to take me. I ended up driving 20 or so miles on some (thankfully paved) desert back roads. Finally, just when the GPS said I was only 1.2 miles away from the 395, slightly north of the Garlock road, I came upon a railroad crossing. The red lights were flashing and the arms were down. There was a freight train sitting there, aimed north, and not moving an inch. It was pretty late and dark, especially since there's no such thing as a street light around that area. I stopped about 100 feet back (I was in the only car for miles around, apparently). There were three engines at the front of the train, all of them straddling the road I was on. Behind them was a line of cars stretching for I have no idea how far. Like I said, it was dark. Looked like it could have been a mile. Just a guess... I waited for maybe 30 seconds, then figured I'd turn around and see if I could find my way back to Ridgecrest. But, then the train started moving forward. Slowly... It moved forward maybe three train cars worth, then stopped. I waited... Then, it started to slowly move backward! Again, maybe three train car lengths. I kept watching as the process was repeated three more times. I guess there must be some kind of switching station south of there and they were adding cars to it or something... Sure put the lead engine in a bad place for me, though. No matter how far back and forth it went, they didn't stop blocking the road I was on. After the train had backed up for the third or fourth time, I saw someone hop down from the far front end of the lead engine. He walked around in front if it and that's when he saw me, parked on the road a hundred feet from the tracks. Even from that distance I could see the surprise in his reaction. He waved at me and clambered back up onto the lead engine. It took another minute or two, but then the whole freight train started backing up again. Only, this time it kept going until all of the cars were no longer straddling the road I was on, and the arms raised and red lights stopped flashing. And I continued on the next mile-plus to Highway 395... ![]() He never blew the train's whistle, though... I was expecting him to do that after he noticed I was there. I remember you once saying they're required to do that any time they see a car or person near an crossing. COOL! Permagrin wrote in post #7214195 does anyone know what the difference is btw. 14bit and 12bit raw? (yeah I know it's a nikon question but if you know I'd like to know). The grip will only shoot 8fps if I'm in 12bit. (this is on the D300...on the D700 I can stay in 14bit). I just wondered if there was loss of quality. Canon too - 1D3 started the 14-bit. Basically, 14 shades of grey instead of 12. Likewise. Lightstream wrote in post #7219199 Unless their image processor is only capable of handling a maximum of 12 bits at one go. The sensor gathers 14 bits, and they are processed perhaps in two operations (2x12 worth of bits, discarding some). This is probably not noticeable in regular use, but at max speed, it might cause issues. Just a guess from what I've seen in the computing world. (Anybody remember the 32-bit processors with 16-bit memory buses..) Heck, I remember 16 bit processors with 8-bit data bus. And I was already in computers when they came along. Woolburr wrote in post #7220375 I don't even know what to say about that announcement, other than I went sort of numb when I read it. I think they just redefined obscene. They've been doing that every quarter for the past several years. Woolburr wrote in post #7221237 Oh Jon....paging Jon....Tracy has a question about mini-laptops. Shoot . . . They're $329 at Micro Center or NewEgg last I looked. The 160 GB HDD version is only $349. But they don't want to run DPP unless you hook up an external monitor; 1024x600's too low res. according to Canon. I have one and added another half gig of RAM to it. It's usable on travel and as a netbook, but the keyboard's not as good as the one on my old Toshiba Libretto (1 GHz Pentium M, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HDD, and dating to early 2006) which I'm using right now. 1280x768 and it's been to Europe and all over the US in an outside pocket of my camera bag. I do most of my computing on "netbooks" these days. Jon
