I just recently purchased the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and I now have the opportunity to buy a refurbished Canon 17-55 f/2.8 for about $750. (timing, a pain in the *** ain't it)

Is this upgrade worth it? I have read many good things about the 17-55, especially about the glass being "L" quality. I figure I can resell the Tamron and apply that money towards the Canon.

All feedback is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I think the optics are similar enough to be trivial.
However, the Canon has a better AF system and an IS.
It does cost more, is bigger/heavier, and does not come with a hood and lastly has a non center pinch lens cap.

I think you have to decide if the difference in price is worth it or not.

If you have the money...go for it. Just know that it's not a HUGE jump in image quality. If you'll rarely need IS, though, the sticking with the Tamron is probably a smarter decision... Most of what you're paying for is IS and USM.

Don't know how much you've shot with your Tammy. You should know by now that's it's fast, sharp, light and has a 6 year warranty.

Technically, the Canon is superior, but real-world I don't think you're going to gain a great deal. Used lens makes the issue a little stickier, make sure you know what you're getting if you switch.

If you sell your Tamron and buy the Canon, factoring in what you lose on selling the Tamron, what you end up with is a used 17-55 that you paid brand-new price for.

I agree with what beepclick says, I would personally stick with the Tamron- there's other ways that you could spend that money that would benefit your photography more in my opinion than upgrading to the Canon. If you do a lot of low light work though and can justify the extra money then the IS will really help.

If you're not happy with your Tamron, go for it.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

There was someone selling the 17-55 lens on another forum for $650 and I almost bought it but I couldn't justify paying $350 more for faster/quieter AF and IS. It's your call but IQ is almost identical.

Look at the work order and see if its had the IS replaced and dust cleaned.

Otherwise buy new if your adamant about getting the 17-55IS. One thing that you may find is the speed of the AF is better on the Canon. That would be more of my concern than IQ.

For that money I'd throw it towards the new sigma 24-70 if you already have the Tamron 17-50 OR another focal length/prime you desire.

yeah that's a biggie .

hey has tamron ever designed a rear cap that installs as easily as canon's or do you still have to fumble with it and line it up correctly?
