So that far north, how often do the Northern Lights usually occur? Is it like a nightly thing? Are there "seasons" to it? I from Iowa, and I've only seen them once in my 21 years so far. Good thing is though, I'm still young and I have plenty of time left in my life to travel.
Every single night, usually, but it depends on the aurora and when it's acting uip. If you go far enough out you'll see flickrs and waves of them from time to time, but nothing quite like this. These kind of displays are rare, the composition I got was rare too.
Green is the most common color, followed by red and then purple and then blue and extreme rare is yellow. In finland they get some crazy colors, but I hear it's not as consistent as it is in northern canada.
I remember reading somewhere that green was the solar radiation that was harmful to the atmosphere or the ozone layer (something like that, I just enjoy them but don't ask me on their technicalities
) because what it meant was it was destructing the atmopshere at a faster rate than the other colors did.
The best viewing season ranges between september-may. In the summer (may-august), we have something like 9 month winters her, it's too bright ("the land of the midnight sun") because were so far up north it's daylight all the time.
Also it's good if its freezing out, means the aurora will be crisp and clear if you get away from the towns.
