Hello,
I'm looking for input from someone who's used both a 5D ii and a 1D iii. I have a large sum of $$$ coming (hopefully sooner rather than later!) which will provide 6-7K for a once in a lifetime type of Camera Equipment Upgrade. I'm having a hard time making decisions between these two cameras - mostly because I'm physically limited right now and can't get to a shop to spend time monkeying with them! I'm a big believer in what a piece of equipment 'tells me' as I physically hold it. It's how I chose EOS when I first got into AF film shooting way back when!
Until my physical mobility improves and/or the funds come I'd appreciate anyone sharing their thoughts on 1 versus the other. The lens choice thing is something I am pretty well sorted out on my decision process! I haven't owned any of the many many contenders, but I've held or handled almost all of them and shot with a few. It's more a case of choosing which ones after deciding how much I blow on the body.
My photography is like me, it follows my curiousities. My most important criteria is that the images be terrific and at the peak of my ability or the ability of my equipment to go. Sharp, rich, detailed, and visually spectacular. I learned photography in a University environment emphasizing the qualities an Ansel Adams type shooter would value. I have no real need for massive prints, so even my 20D holds up in the 8x10ish range quite well, but I want big images to be in my toolkit now that I have the money.
I've also shot with an EOS-1n based digital camera and the fantastic build and ergonomics and strength of a camera like that calls out to me with a mythic syren call - potentially calling this sailor to it's rocky shores! Is 10mp enough? Is the 5D not built well enough? It's a difficult equation I am facing and I think both cameras are the 'right' choice. Any info one might give or link me to would be terrific.

Thanks.

I'm a michigander as well.

I'm over by Grand Rapids.

I didn't see the thread as I bumbled around potn. I'll try a better search!

I have both the image size and color from 5D mkII is very impressive, but you need to good glass for this camera.

I'm still working on the micro adjustments on my lens.

1D mkIII out of the box takes a lot more time to learn to use compared to the 5D mkII & between the 2 cameras i would recomend the 5D mkII.

Richard, I have both. IMO, it depends on what you mostly shoot. Both cameras can do everything but the 5DII w/ its full frame and lower FPS is soooo nice for landscapes, architecture, etc and with the 21.1meg, you can blow stuff up huge. The 1DIII with its AMAZING autofocus and 10FPS and 1.3x is fantastic for sports and wildlife! You really can't go wrong with either. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Some stuff that says "Canon" on it and a happy trigger finger.

Hi Brad!
I have a question for you. This might be a difficult question to convey in words and not seeing the photographs I consider to have 'it', but I'm wondering how much WOW! Mkiii images can contain. For instance, using your 135L and the mkiii with an interesting subject and nailing 'the exposure' to your personal satisfaction, would that image be capable of making you -the photographer- go WOW when you come see it come up on your computer screen? WOW can definitely be a personal consideration, but I think someone with as resplendent an L investment as you have made will understand what I'm talking about.
I have made a few WOW images with my 20D and mostly all with the zeiss lens, now that I think about it! Lots of Great Images that would for sure be WOW with any sort of better lenses to pull out of my camera bag! But one shoots with what one has and not sit at home imagining the images better lenses would let me get! I happen to display a framed (small) print from a Single Use Camera - sometimes content can outshine image quality flaws, just sometimes. :-)
Thanks to you and all on POTN,
Richard

Would you mind sharing a PM or email or two Brad?

Hi Richard. I actually do have the 135 f/2L and yes, it and the 1DmkIII can produce that WOW factor you are wondering about. I also have the 70-200 2.8L IS which was my favorite for shooting hockey. Since I picked up the 135, I haven't used anything else! But I absolutely agree with you! the WOW images I've taken depend far more on the "moment" then the equipment I am using at the time. I don't think that for those few special - those really special pictures - the ones that make you do a little dance after you take it and think, hey I'm actually pretty good at this - it really matters what camera you are holding or what lens is on it. IMO. Happily, I can afford most of the equipment that I want so I have what I want.

Richard, Ps. I would be happy to pm you if you still want. I have some of the lenses that Gary has - although I am envious of his collection.
