I'M just about to pull the trigger on a new i7 system and in some distant thread I remember someone saying something about getting Vista Ultimate to take better advantage of 64bits or RAM or something.

In looking at the comparisons between Ultimate and Home Premium nothing jumps out at me. Would one of you experts give me some advice on the advantages for us in Ultimate over Home Premium?

Thanks

No. You get a few things like bitlocker, moving desktop (videos) and the ability to join networks (domains)... it's all nice but not 'needed'. The important thing is you get 64bit. They are exactly the same OS, Ultimate just as a few more bells and whistles.

The only thing I want/miss in Ultimate that is not available in Home Premium is the Remote Desktop service (the server, not the client). I find this extremely useful on my XP professional and XP MCE systems.

UltraVNC (external link) - Freeware, offers encryption and can go over the internet.

Thank you for the responses. So no better utilization of RAM or anything like that?

As far as backup, I use a separate program so that is not a concern.

I read that Windows 7, Vista's replacement, is due to be shipped in 12 months time. Beta versions have been released for testing.

According the the article I saw, Vista has suffered badly due to Microsofts botched design, they apparently spent several years on development which was ditched at the last minute, then were rushed into producing something (anything) and it all went badly wrong for them.

Yep, Explorer was rewritten from scratch for Windows 7. I won't repeat all the bad press (we've all seen and heard it); enough to say that you don't scrap years of work if something worked right in the first place and most of Windows 7 has been rewritten.

I've read nothing but good things about Windows 7, leaner, faster. Too bad it's still a little way off. Vista really didn't last long did it?

Yes, I am aware of Ultra VNC, and have and currently used it. I find that the windows remote desktop performs better, especially over SSH tunnels.

If you can wait for Windows 7, I think it will prove worth it (from all appearances right now). The i7's should also come down considerably in price (as well as the mobos and DDR3 ram that accompanies with it).

I'm still worried about Windows 7; there is a lot of time to mess it up still ;)

It is almost entirely rewritten and Explorer was totally dumped for a re-write due to it's abysmal launch. Today Vista is 200% better than it was on release, but I'll still see those mysterious ghosts from the past from time to time on systems - namely the Explorer slowing down problem. It doesn't effect many people now, but it used to be very common. Even Microsoft's Shell Team has problems defending Vista. That's too bad too, I was looking forward to Vista. Now I've "lost that lov'en feeling" with Vista and Windows 7. Maybe Windows 8 will knock my socks off

I'd love to wait, but from what I've heard it's a little too far down the road. I've read July at the earliest, and as these things generally go that date is probably wishful thinking.
