So I just purchased a backdrop system here on POTN to start playing around with. I was going to use ebay wireless triggers and 3 flashes I have, but now I'm thinking if I should invest in some lighting. I'm pretty tight on budget as I spent more than I wanted to this month and I'm still trying to sell my Rebel XT to help with the funds. Anyone have suggestions? Should I stick with what I have now or is there any recommendations for an inexpensive lighting system? I was looking at the Alienbees but don't think I even have funding for that.

I've posted before. but take a look at this set. I have been VERY pleased with the consistency of these lights. They were recommended by another photographer here. http://www.adorama.com/PAINT146.html#ProductReviews (external link)

You kinda get everything you need to start out. 3X 300 w/s lights w/ modeling lamps, umbrella, softbox, stands, barndoors, snoot, sync cords and a bag to carry it all if you want to take it on the go.

The strobes themselves are fantastic. Consistent, plenty of power, and I've never had one not fire from a failure from the optical sensor. Modeling lights have 2 modes. One where it adjusts as you adjust the intensity of the lights and another where they are just on high. And of course you can just shut them off. The roller bag is great if you want to load everything up and take it with you. Can't say enough about the strobes.

the stands are not the greatest quality. They work just fine but you can tell that they are not high quality. I have not had any issues with them, but it's one of those things you can just tell that the are lacking. Softbox is a bit small at only 24" Sync cords aren't the greatest. (I use my lights exclusively indoors so I just bought one cybersync TX and on RCVR. ($140 well spent) I picked up a set of 7 Interfit gels for the barndoors for $35.
To get everything at a price of $600 to start out I was very happy and I really have taken a liking to the strobes. My opinion is that if you want at fairly complete setup with decent powered strobes and even the AB's come in over your budget for a complete setup, this is a great kit.

+1 to the interfit. I got the 2 light kit (150ws) and in a small studio, house, or garage, they are absolutely wonderful for the price I paid. If i had to do it again I'd have gone with the kit mentioned above. You can get it cheaper on ebay though. Adorama you get name, returns and reliability. Ebay you get... well ebay.
