There are a few options in the menu for high iso noise reduction. Anyone here that has done any testing of these (on and off) to see what the differences are? I'm seeing more noise at high iso than some of you, and I think it's because I have all those features disabled.

Change the setting - take a picture - try a different setting - take another picture.
I leave mine on default.

I see almost no difference in ACR with the different High ISO NR settings. To see the difference in DPP, simply take a RAW shot and adjust the sliders in the NR/Lens/ALO tab

I leave mine off. Honestly I don't even know if the camera applies it to the RAW file, but I would rather deal with it in post processing anyway.... and my "noise removal" workflow usually means doing nothing. :)

Ah, I hadn't thought about RAW vs JPG - I only shoot RAW and I don't use DPP so that may explain a few things here. That makes more sense now that I think about it from that perspective.

How are your exposures? Can you post some examples of photos you weren't pleased with?

The high ISO NR has no effect on the raw data (but the long exposure NR does).

Is that so for sure?

Not that I'm displeased. Just curious. No noise reduction at all on this shot, and you sure can see it. But at ISO 6400 I would expect some. I've seen some shots here though with high ISO without all this noise, and I expect it must be from noise reduction processing. Either post or using the camera's NR.

The whole shot:

Wow, are your expectations high. That looks great. 6400, and it retained the texture at 100%. And, it cleans up fantastic.

I've tried the in-camera options, when shooting JPG. Better to leave them off, and manage it in PP. That way you decided how much noise vs detail. Same with the sharpening.

A quick pass with Noiseware:

Not so much high expectations as I've seen cleaner shots here, and wondered how they got them. Thanks for your example. I haven't been using any noise processing, but your example demonstrates exactly what I was wanting to see. Thanks again. Noiseware eh?

For 6400 with no NR that's pretty darn good, the cleaner shots you've seen I'm sure have some NR included.
The camera does apply NR to RAW files as well as JPEG, I use DPP to convert. I've gone both ways, using the default NR and turning it off. I'm back to default, if I feel it degrades the image or I need more detail I reduce it in DPP with the sliders.
