Hi all, i will post some pics in a bit, but just wondering, how sharp is sharp for the Sigma?
I recently took a building/group pic and had very poor sharpness on people and building (certainly could have been used error - but was on a tripod and focused both manually and auto (center point)).
I mainly find at the wide end 10mm - even from a couple of feet away, pics of a typed page can be fuzzy and in some cases almost unreadable.

Anyone have some 100% crops of details to see - preferably words or sharp edges.

Again, will post an example of the group photo and the "text-test" shortly.

Thanks!

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

what ISO? what aperature? what shutter speed? we need more information in order to help assess the problem.

Mines very sharp throughout the range. Only downside is quality in corners is bit poor but to be expected with such wide-angle. I'm happy with mine.

As I mentioned will post pics soon (was hoping to get some images from others in the meantime.)
As for settings I used (for the indoor test) - ISO 100, 5.6 and 7.1 and around 1/15 (I think) set on a tripod.

AzzA - is that a Pulsar GtiR I see in your avatar?

okay, here are the two images, they shoudl both be 100% crops - first group shot was a jpg file, the lower one was a RAW converted - no WB etc... My guess is it's mainly operator error - but I started to get "concerned" when I looked at some older shots I took with the lens as well...

First, taken outside, subzero temp - sun coming up behind subjects unfortunately
EXIF
10mm
ISO 400
1/200
F5.6
Focus on the head of the girl in the bright white coat near center - tripod mounted - had one of the site workers push the trigger.

Indoors, I realize poor light - halogens on either side - and the poor light may be my issue...
EXIF10mm
ISO 100
1/10
F7.1
Focused where it says Table 21-2 - the shot I took at the same settings, but at 20mm were quite a bit sharper.

100% crops? Wow. Those look pretty darn good for an ultrawide.

I think I should start a poll:
1 - operator error
2 - could be sharper
3 - you, my friend are on crack! :)

BTW the bottom pic was taken from 2 and half feet away...

if this is true...i'm voting for #3...haha...why would that group shot be a 100% crop?...what else were you taking a picture of?

if the second one is a 100% crop...i think it's sharp enough

The group shot had the rest of the hospital we are building in the background.
Thanks! I think I will have to check myself in for rehab... :(

At first I was worried I did my crops wrong - tried it the math way as well - got a smaller crop but with same sharpness. (First two pics above, zoomed in to 100% - cropped image saved as a JPG with changin size, etc)

Pics below, looked at image size, figured out area, divided by 100, square root of that gave me like 317x317pix - set my marquee tool for that and saved the image...

If I goofed in my cropping I'm sure someone will let me know. Otherwise, I'll shut-up now and continue to enjoy my Sigma!:D

Notice how many of the people are MUCH sharper than others? At 1/200, you won't be stopping any motion without flash. Blame the people in the picture for the softness there, and tell them to hold more still.
