From Jim Neiger's Fly South with the Birds (external link) workshop. We went back out to the same lake this afternoon. There wasn't as much flight action as we hoped, so we didn't have many really good opportunities. I'm still looking for that perfect flights shot! Again, these are all hand held with the 500 f/4. My arm is really tired.

Here's a little blue heron. It's smaller than a great blue heron, more blue, and more uniform in color.

Argh, too close to this great blue heron!!

Limpkin. They are another snail eater like the snail kite.

At the end of the day we found this young male snail kite eating a snail. He took his time eating it.

We waited and waited for him to finish that snail. And then ... argh, too close!!

Lovely series, Liz. Handheld? Wow! I'd be exhausted.

Nice shots, Liz. One reason I like the 100-400 is the ability to go wider when I somehow get in too close. Still, I envy those of you with nice, long primes. I guess we are never happy.

All terrific shots on both posts Liz. I ran into someone recently who took the same workshop from Jim about a year ago and she was using the 500mm handheld just like you. She had a great time, learned an awful lot and is much stronger than before. Have fun and I look forward to your upcoming posts!

Nice shots Liz. When I worked in the oil field, a hand was a, you know, an extra guy to do the heavy work. That's what you need for that 500/4. :)
