Perry,
....get your hands on a 1D3S....and do a comparo to your 1D3 ! I'd like to hear your take on the FF. Having had the 1DS for a few weeks now....I gotta say that I do love using this thing.....I think I can see a 1D3S in my future....

regards, george w

i have had both since november. the biggest differences i can see beside the obvious like sensor and file size is the 1d mark III is more noise free and takes less sharpening.

if you don't need the resolution there's no doubt that the 1d mark III is the better deal. it is the best all-around camera that i've even used by a longshot :D.

Not happening. I'm not made of money, and I like the 1D3 + 5D combo, I like this body to be 1.3x crop too since it'll be my main birding body. Ed's right.

Ed,
Thanks for comment. What specific photo ops do you pick up the S and leave the regular 3 in the bag ?

George -- lately the only time i use the 1d mark III is when i'm using two cameras.

the 1ds has so much resolution that it has more "reach" than the 1d so the 1d's main advantage is its handling in low light, responsiveness and FPS. the 1d3 produces cleaner files and has iso 6400....the 1ds only goes up to 3200. i very seldom shoot over iso 1600 tho and the difference isn't that much.

i never shoot at 10 fps tho. 6-7 at most. so the 1d3 is a little slower in FPS but i think i can get away with 5 fps.

the tour of california will be here in a couple of weeks and i plan to use the 1d for the time trials (cyclists @ 30 mph) and the 1ds on a hill climb that i shoot every year (cyclists @ 10-15 mph).

but if i shoot two time trials i will use the 1ds for one. i have a 300L f4 IS on the way for that and i did use my 5d a couple of years ago for the fast stuff even tho it struggled with shutter lag and slow fps.

so unless you really need more than 5 fps and iso 3200 (i seldom shoot above iso 1600) the 1ds is really all you need.

today my neighbor wanted me to take pictures of her german shepherds. instead of grabbing the 1d i used the the 1ds and shot in SRAW. plenty of resolution for what i was doing and PPing was super quick because i wasn't wrestling with the massive files.

the 1d3 is of course capable of producing more stunning images but after using the 1d3 for a year the difference isn't much.

both are great cameras.

I agree with your review. After having tried a 50D and reading about the 5D II, I fully expect that the next version of the MKIII (MKIV or MKIIIn) will have the new LCD, a bit more resolution, AF during live view, and movie mode, but the ISO performance will be about the same. It will be an exciting model based on an already excellent model, I really like my MKIII!

do you think the next generation will be 1.3 crop?

Ed,
Thanks for the comments. I'm new to this whole concept of FF....having just bought a 1DS a few weeks ago. To be honest, I'm still on the steep part of the learning curve with it....and while it is a "slow old thing", I'm just having a great time shooting with it. I'm getting some really great shots with it, and it's so much fun to handle. Obviously, high ASA performance is severely lacking with it, but I have my 50D to fill that need.

My biggest shortcomings with all this right now is that:

A. ....I bought the 50D at the first of October, and
b. ....I bought the 1DS a few weeks ago.... and

....since October, I have been having to put waaay too many hours in at work, so I have not had the chance to really learn and get comfortable with either of these bodies. What I need is to hit the danged lotto so I can tell the boss to shove it and go outside and play with cameras all the time. Now....where IS that winning ticket.....??

Thanks again for the comments. Food for thought.

george w

ps. Perry...didn't mean to hijack your thread....I kinda got off in never-never land there....

Of course a 1DsIII would be sweet, but surely price has to come into it :p. For the price of a 1DsIII, I'd rather have a 5DII + 1DIII and have money left over.

For sure. And for now, I'm going to enjoy the bodies I have.....and spend the next $$ on glass. Next up is a 300 f/2.8. I think it will compliment the rest of my glass very nicely.
