Out on the second morning at Jim Neiger's Fly South with the Birds (external link) workshop. We went to the same lake and at first it looked to be a slow morning for snail kites. There was a cold snap here a few days ago (got down into the 20's) and so the kites dispersed. Then we found a few and I had a chance to practice some more in flight shots. The morning light here is great but doesn't last long! These are all handheld with the 500 f/4.

Great blue heron in the beautiful morning light.

My best flight shot so far, an adult male snail kite.

Got a great blue in flight, unfortunately against the water instead of something more scenic.

Female snail kite landing on a perch. The light is getting harsher now.

Beautiful adult male snail kite. This was actually a pair and they have a nest nearby this spot. These mature birds were very tolerant of our presence.

This is the female of the pair, towards the end of the morning when the light was quite a bit more harsh.

Liz, I eagerly await your shots each day. I think being in a boat is quite an advantage. I need to bite the bullet and get a kayak that is stable enough for a short tripod. (and light enough for me to lift to the top of the car....) These shots are outstanding! And you are right, that morning light is fantastic. Way to go!

Well done, Liz! That second shot is KILLER! Stick with the handheld 500mm and soon flight shots like these will be cake.

Spectacular series. The Kite landing shot is my favorite if I had to pick just one....again, all very well done.

Thanks all! I was really happy with that kite shot, it's the one I was looking to get here. Of course I wouldn't mind getting a few more like that. ;)

Liz, truly superb shots. The in flight GBH looks like a painting. Looking forward to more of your shots. That one really is a wall hanger.
