I bumped up the sharpness in my 40D but returned to default setting after I figured out that bumping it up means 20 minutes to transfer RAW images from CF card to computer.

Same process takes three minutes with sharpness in default setting.

Anyone else experience this?

If you're shooting in RAW it shouldn't make a difference as any settings you do in camera will on be seen on the rear display. These settings aren't transfered with the RAW.

Some programs will pick up on settings that have been changed in camera and apply them, but it still shouldn't affect the files that badly to make the download period 6 times longer. Do you use a card reader? Might make a world of difference.

Transfer speed from CF to computer is a function of your card reader, and the files sizes of your images. Setting the sharpening, Pictures styles, ALO, etc type of settings do NOTHING to the raw files, except for turning on a little flag embedded in the RAW file that says the setting was used. Your files sizes should not increase by doing this.

In this case, I think that this is a perceptual slowdown, rather than a real one. BTW, I can fill up a 2GB card, and it still only takes about a minute of less to transfer 2gb from my reader to PC (and these are with Sandisk Ultra II's which are their slowest models). I'm not sure how much data you have on your cards for it to take 20 minutes. Also, are you transferring at USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 speeds?

Yeah, I'm using a card reader. Cards are Ridata 2Gb. USB ports are 2.0. Computer is Apple iMac G5. I went back to default sharpness setting and have no plans to monkey with it again. Some people on this board wrote about doing it, so I wanted to try. But, when shooting RAW at least, it only bumps up the sharpness a little on all pictures, something I can easily do in DPP. My main reason for posting was to see if anyone else had the problem.

The sharpness setting will NOT affect the RAW file, nor will it have any effect on the transfer speed.

I don't know what caused the delay on your computer but it had nothing to do with the sharpness setting you used.

It doesn't sound like you are listening to the posts regarding the fact that the sharpness setting in your camera has no affect on RAW images. . .

I notice you are using a Mac and a card reader. How do you clear the images off your card?

Are you deleting them on the Mac?

Or are you formatting the card EVERY time you put it back in your camera?

If you are doing the former (deleting on the Mac) try the latter (format the card in the camera).
