I suspect that it's legit.

People who are not aware of photography, often undershoot the skill and ability required, as well as the cost of the equipment. Put yourself in their shoes...I mean c'mon, your just pointing a camera at something and hitting the shutter button. You don't even have to pay for film. What's so hard about that? Even my cousin's wife can take great pictures with her P&S (if she takes enough, law of statistic will eventually get her an incredible picture). It is not until you actually get into photography, that you are exposed to the amount of knowledge, and cost to get the gear.

I have no doubt that they will get someone. There will ALWAYS be people who get their first DSLR, and want go "get started in the business" and are willing to take on sub-market jobs just to get some experience under their belt.

A little while ago there was an ad on craigslist for an intern with an award winning photographer and director. Someone posted it on another board and everyone read it going "yea right" figuring it was a joke or scam because it mentioned no name and a long description but no real details. Turned out to be a major name actually looking for an intern and I can't help but wonder how many people missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime because of this mentality. It's why you look into things before determining if it's a scam or not.

Color me paranoid but the first vibe I took from the ad was...

"We need someone with a good quality camera and some skills to be on hand when we do something we'd like "accidentally" photographed..."

Maybe I've watched "Blowout" too many times... <shrug>

I saw an ad on CL for a wedding shooter, they wanted to pay $200 for a wedding that was a week away. A few days latter I noticed they changed it to $100 and then it got flagged. Craigslist is a never ending source of amusement.

I just discovered "The Best Of"

re: potential scam

My first thoughts were they wanted a portfolio to get photos they can basically steal, and the rest was just fluff to give the appearance of legitimacy.

Eh, who knows.

Could be that a magazine needs a single headshot of a person they are profiling (as the ad seems to indicate) who lives in that area where they don't happen to have any contacts, so they're looking for someone (who does not have a P&S) who can run out there for a 10 minute job, hand over a file, and be done with it.

BTW, there are lots of markets in the US where people get legit high end work from CL all the time. Hollywood studios even use it to find 3D people. It's not always a scam.

It's like the lottery. Someone gets lucky, but most are better off paying their rent instead of buying tickets. No you don't have money out browsing craigslist, but you do have risks...some/most of them not worth the chance.

I'd be far more inclined to believe the folks working on the "high end" stuff in LaLa Land:

1) Were actively recruited via word of mouth
2) Haven't had to send a resume anywhere in years
3) Were not hired through CL

I am suprised that they are offering any cash at all!! So many ads and not just CL want experienced, well equipped "professional" photographers for just a byline or the offer of a cover or published pix.

Actually to be quite honest that rate is not too unusual. The prices for editorial work have been on a slide for over 20 years!! There are several name shooters in NY and LA that would take that for 200 - 350.

And as it is a asian based pub the camera has a LOT to do with getting the gig. I have had several ask that very question, it is a trend started by the camera companies themselves. People buy because you have the ability to get a fancy camera, not because you are a good shooter...
