Hi everyone,

I am considering purchasing more lighting equipment for location potrait photography. I own a Canon 430ex and an Interfit Stellar Xtreme 300 portable flash with 1m softbox and 1m translucent umbrella (with Interfit IR trigger).

The aim is to have a set up so the main light (Interfit) with softbox/ umbrella is to the side of the camera/ model, and there is another light used as a hair light hidden behind them. The problem with this is that my Interfit trigger doesn't work with Canon flashes, and if I purchased an ST-E2 or 580EX to use from camera, then the 430ex would have to be within line of sight so couldn't be hidden. I was considering getting a set of Pocket Wizards (I know there are alternatives but I need the reliability) for the flash, but I wasn't sure how these connected to the flash? Would it be possible to have these attached to the 430EX or would I also have to buy a 580EX and leave the 430 out of this set up? I would greatly appreciate your help!

Many thanks,
George

This is a solution if your body has a PC socket. If it does not have a PC socket you can put one of these...

... between the PocketWizard and the hot shoe on the body but I believe that you would lose E-TTL to the 430EX.

Not that that would matter if you're using manual mode and a meter.

Thanks for that help, I appreciate it! my camera (Canon 40d at the minute) does have a PC socket. What if I wanted to use the lights the other way round though, as in Interfit close to camera for better main lighting and 430ex behind model? is it possible to connect the pocket wizard to the 430ex with a PC cord (with the other pocket wizard on camera hotshoe) and then use the interfit through pc cord to camera as normal?

Cheers bobby, would i be right in thinking that with that I could have one PW straight on the camera hotshoe, and the other connected to the 430EX, whilst also having the Interfit connected to my camera's PC socket? because this would be the perfect setup and save me buying a 580ex :)

Sure, though the quality of light might (or might not) be inadequate. You could also use a Canon E-TTL off camera cord to the strobe on the frame (so as to keep it high) and then use the PC cord to the PocketWizard.

Lots of ways to set this up.

FlashZebra is a great place to find gear for this kind of setup and they'll make custom cables for you too.
