Thanks, Moppie.
I could probably build my own set but don't have the time. I'm dreading the time it will take just to get all the software installed and configure the new system.

I ordered a XPS 420 from Dell.
Quad core, 8GB RAM and 64-bit Vista.
$1,088 including tax and shipping.

So , how is the new machine working out. I am looking at a simliar Dell system, any changes you would make from above? How many hard drives did you install in the new Box?

The new machine seems to be working fine. Lightroom renders images much faster and converts batches of RAW files at a rate of about 2 seconds per image, compared to maybe 6 seconds per image with the old machine.

Batch processing with Noise Ninja is only marginally faster.
I only have one internal hard drive right now but will probably get another one.
I have an external drive for data backup.

My 20D crapped out on me a few weeks ago so I upgraded to a 1D Mk III. Its files are twice as big as the 20D which would have made my old machine beg for mercy. The new machine handles them without issue.

My Dell Vostro was painfully slow running LR 2.3 and I upgraded the RAM to 4GB(used 3.75 of it) and now it flies...

my system specs
Vostro 1500, Intel Core 2 Duo T5270, 1.4GHz, 800Mhz, 2M L2 Cache
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD display with TrueLife for Vostro 1500
1GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 DIMM
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition, SP2

Not sure if my NVIDIA Card is integrated or can be swapped out but as it stands I am happy with the performance of my machine...but prior to the RAM upgrade it was painfully slow...fwiw, I used MUSHKIN RAM

man i need to upgrade.

anyhow, from what i understand, lightroom does not use your graphics card so its speed is solely dependent upon your processor and the amount of ram.
