Back when I was an undergrad, I worked at Vickers Defence Systems, on designing and developing parts for the Challenger 2E tank. So we ended down in Bovington (south of London) to test out a few tanks on the army course. The machine gun on the top fired about 200 rounds a minute. Whilst we were standing quite a distance away from the tank, the trigger became stuck and locked in for some reason. The bullets kept firing and the barrel of the gun drooped because of the heat produced...needless to say bullets went all over the place. Never ran for my life so fast!!

Now I am a bit wary about railguns etc!

Heh, reminds me of an episode of the Mythbusters where they mow down a tree with some incredibly fast machine gun. Given a couple minutes, nothing stood a chance against this thing! I watched in amazement as the gun literally sprayed casings all over the ground. So many bullet casings ....

Once a firearm reaches an overheated condition it can fire from just the heat of the barrel cooking off rounds, whether the trigger is pulled or not, creating a runaway situation. The gun will continue to feed and cook off rounds until it is empty or breaks. It is rare and usually caused by misuse, or as you described, on a test range.

I can see a rugby tackle being conducted by Christopher on the dog walker in my head now...

Then on our way home, he saw the manager's white lab puppy. He couln't resist.

so, there he is, feeding the puppy grass and whatever else he can pull up from the ground. Being a sizable puppy, the dog was getting a bit enthusiastic. We had to restrain the boy a bit. They were both quite enthusiastic.

The dog barked excitedly and Christopher exclaims "Woooow! Doggie!"

Yup you need a dog. I have a connection in Utah, I think you know her.

Tonight we'll be under a high risk for severe weather. Hail, Isolated (haha) tornados, damaging winds, torrential rains, and of course lightening.

I love spring in Texas! Even if it isn't quite spring yet!

Hey all!

I know that some of you talked about cookies a few days ago? Has anyone a good recipe? I'd like to make some one day. If you think you've got the best recipe, feel free to PM it to me or post it ;-)a

Wife makes some really fantastic oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies. They are so good. I'll steal the recipe off her for you - just remind me!

Well that's the thing....200 rounds a minute, and the trigger sticks open...the friction heat started to melt the barrel, the barrel drooped, the bullets kept firing through the side of the barrel, casings everywhere - i have my souvenir casing. One casing went flying about, another bullet penetrated it perpendicular and went right through the casing. Looks pretty cool, I must say. It only stopped when the ammo ran out. But as you said, had the trigger became unstuck, it would have carried on with the heat creating a runaway situation...

We're pretty maxed out on mammals in our apartment, 3 humans and 3 cats is all we have room for.

Hehe... Christopher was so funny last night. We as a family went for a short walk. Someone appeared in the distance, walking a dog. Christopher immediately shouts out "Doggy!" and starts running full-tilt toward the dog walker.

So when will you be getting one?

I have been a shooter and collector most my life. It fits with the whole "I like things that go boom" personality. Since taking up horses and photography I really don't shoot much or spend money on it anymore. I really like tools and precision instruments so guns fit in.
