Either one is great for the 5D, but the 580EX II has lots of very valuable features not found on the 580EX:

Metal Hotshoe
Weather Sealing
Quick release mechanism
Silent recycle
Faster re-cycle
Threaded PC socket
External AutoFlash Exposure Sensor
In-camera Flash Menu with Digic III or IV Cameras
(40D, 50D, 5D II, 1D III, XSi, XS, G9, G10 etc.)

The only negative is the lack of a simple master on/off switch. You have to go into the menu to make selections.

Mike, I see you have a 580EXII as well.

With regard to the threaded PC socket, on mine there seem to be no proper inner threads, just one inside groove, running parallel to the socket edge (rather than helicoidal). Not that I mind very much, but the threads of my thread-lock cord do not seem to engage, unless I press the bolt in firmly while turning it, when probably just one thread engages, tentatively.

Just wondering if that's as it is supposed to be.

I have never used the PC connection so I really can't say. But looking at mine, I don't see much of a thread either.

I have both, they work pretty much the same. The 580EX II metal hotshoe is a good thing, but mine's quite wobbly at the moment.
