Hey guys, well recently I have picked up a liking for people photography. And so the first thing I need to do is purchase some lighting. But this is where I am stuck. So if the pros could steer me into the right direction by telling me what sort of lights I should start with and how many of each and just whatever comes to mind to tell me that would be great :p Cost really isn't an issue but remember I am new to this sort of photography so until I really enjoy it I don't see myself spending over 1k at the moment. But just help me out, thanks alot in advance guys!!!

-Cole

read lighting 101 @ www.strobist.blogspot.com (external link) that will get you started. Then check Craigslist, there is a Dynalite D804 professional Strobe - $325 (Williamson) listed on Jan 20 for $300. There is also a Photogenic 1250 for $350 listed on Jan 16 and a Canon 550 EX for $250. Don't forget to haggle. You will also need triggers and light modifiers (i.e. umbrella or soft box). Don't forget the light stands.

please answer the following:
-in case of people photography, do you want to take classical portraits, or more event style portraits?
-how much do you EXACTLY want to spend
-where will you be using it? (at home? or outside?)

here's a full list that you can slap together: or at least the one i use.
-Cactus V2s transmitter + 4 receivers
-4 vivitar 285HVs
-3 8' light stands
-1 3' backlight stand
-4 umbrella swivels
-2 45" convertible umbrellas
-1 32" convertible umbrella (or you can add another 45)

this should run you around just about 500 dollars. which is a GREAT portable set up for any hobbyist.

from there you upgrade your system to more expensive heads such as alienbees. Dont get PRO equipment yet, the learning curve will be steep, and you wont know what you are lacking.

That e-bay deal looks pretty low in quality, but it does get you off the ground with everything you need. I agree with Marloon's recommendations, you don't want to go to fast, there is a lot to learn.
