I would like to nice to open this thread with some sample pictures but alas I don't (yet) own this monster.

But it is next on my wish list. If only the exchange rate would stop pushing the price up faster than I can save...

As well as the usual sample shots, I would love to see:

  • What the lens looks like on a 1D body with the hood in place
  • What it looks like hand held.
  • An uncropped moon shot. And the same with 1.4x and 2x
  • The bokeh
Alternatively, if this is too much bother, someone could like to lend me the lens - I would be happy to take pictures of it and with it :-)

I have shots of it mounted on a 40D with a 2x telecon. It shows the magnification quite well.

I have shots with a 40d, 5d and 5d2. Will these be acceptable?

Uncropped, filled frame with the moon. Manual focus during a hazy night.

By looking at this thread one would think this lens is only good for shooting the moon.

It is only good for subjects more than 6m away, that fit within a vertical angle of view of 1 degree 40 minutes.

So, yes, that'll be the moon... :-)

I wonder how the 400 2.8 with a 2x TC compares to the 800 5.6
