Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), also known as the African Purple Swamphen, Purple Moorhen, Purple Gallinule or Purple Coot, is a large bird in the family Rallidae (rails). From its name in French, talève sultane, it is also known as the Sultana Bird. It should not be confused with the American Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio martinica. The common name in New Zealand, used for the subspecies P. p. melanotus, is Pūkeko, which is the Māori name.

It makes me sad, seeing all the bird photos, shot with this magnificent lens!

Thats like seeing Chuck Norris beating Bruce Lee with a noogie.

No, with this lens, I expect to see photos of a Pegasus mating with a unicorn on the rim of a volcano spewing gold bullion and mermaids into azure and lavender skies.

Great captures, Advaitin.

I presume that young guy cut his leg on some coral, or some rocks in the surf.

Outside of our breakwater for the inlet and a ridge of coquina rock north of us in Flagler county, we don't have any surfing areas with those sorts of hazards. I believe the kid was cut by a surfboard fin. There were dozens of surfers in the water just before 150 surfers were to go out and make a memorial circle. At the same time there were lots of normal beach visitors in the area and the kid was just unlucky.

Here's two more. The first was earlier in the day when I actually had good light and is a crop of a butterfly (still not a bird).

+1 ^^^

Dolina, those are some great looking species. Few years back i snapped the below pic of this captive Nicobar pigeon that is noted as being in your area in the wild. Have you ever seen them ? At the time i didnt have my DSLR with me and just used a cheap P&S but this bird has some wonderful colors that would really standout with your gear.

Wonderful looking pigeon but I feel my fellow Filipinos probably ate them to extinction before naturalists had the chance to record them if ever they were present in the Philippine Islands. bw!

The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where replaced by the closely related Rufous Night Heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).
